I ordered this book for my 8 year old grandson who loves rocks and all things shiny. He has a nice little rock collection and I thought this book would help him identify some of those rocks.

This book is 32 pages long and has very colorful pictures of the rocks and minerals being discussed. The words being used to describe them, I found to be appropriate for this age level as far as being able to understand what they were talking about. It even gives the pronunciation of some words that a child of this age group may not quite know yet. This book gives lots of FUN FACTS and has a few riddles as well. There is even a STUMP YOUR PARENTS little quiz towards the end.

I rated this book 5 starts because it is a well written and we'll presented book that really focuses on the learning level of this age (6-9 yrs would be my guess). It is a LEVEL 2 reading level which is a reader going from STARTING to read, to reading INDEPENDENTLY. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for an inexpensive gift to give a young child with a wondering mind!

I previewed this before I sent it to my 8-year-old granddaughter, and was pleased to see it's a pretty good little book for kids who like rocks (she collects them). Most second-graders can read the book independently if they are reading at grade level, and the pictures are fine. It is a very elementary introduction to rocks and minerals, but a good overview with the important facts and features explained. I did not give it five stars because I think that for the price I paid, it could have been somewhat larger, with even better quality photos-- that "National Geographic quality" consumers have come to expect.

Meh. It's a lesson on the earth & igneous/metamorphic rocks. Only 1 or 2 photos of minerals. This book should be re named "Rocks: How they are formed." While the book is educational I bought it for a 4 year old fascinated with minerals and sparkly rocks. We kept the book but I wish I had only ordered 1. We bought 3. 2 to give as gifts with starter rock & mineral collections. I was hoping this would be like a mini Audubon book on minerals. Contains great info but not the photos I was hoping for.

I expected more from this book, but I recognize that it is also an early reader level 2. My son is now a level 4 reader, and went through this book in no time. I had hoped for more in the lines of identification, but this is really just a "how we got it" overview. And for that purpose, it's not bad.

It is true to its reading level. Any child who is at the "I can read" level 2 will find this to be only "slightly" difficult. Of course, level two is still a "reading with assistance" level, something they will need for help with the pronunciation of many of the scientific terms introduced. But by no means is this a basic field guide, something that is most likely my mistake. Next time I will specifically search for field guide instead of assuming that basic rock identification was included (a few are presented, but not enough to be considered a guide).

I ordered this book to go along with our geode set we had purchased to learn more about rocks and minerals. It was actually one of the suggested items that showed up on the bottom of the page. Im so glad we found it though.

This book is a smaller/thinner one, but it is filled with a lot of information and the pictures are bright and colorful. This was a great addition to our homeschool science curriculum and added more information for us to talk about.

This is a national geographic book, so keep in mind it is strictly non fiction. This isnt a story book, and may be a little much for younger children to digest. My six year old loved it, but my four year old wasn't as interested in it.

I think this would make a great addition to any home or classroom and can really help fuel children's love for rocks and minerals!
