Andrew Charman is an experienced journalist and lifelong railway enthusiast with an extensive knowledge of the steam locomotive scene. He is currently taking a training course to qualify as a driver on a heritage steam railway. As well as his own extensive knowledge of the scene, he is calling on the experience of around a dozen former British Railway locomen.

Although Haynes' two previous train manuals, on the A1 class "Tornado" and Castle-class locomotives, were quite technical in nature, this one takes a more down to Earth approach. Rather than focusing on a single type of train, this book takes a broad look at modern steam locomotive operation. Taking advantage of the huge popularity of heritage rail in the UK, this book takes a behind the scenes look at what it takes the run a 19th century machine in the 21st century. The author, a longtime volunteer on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway, writes in a manner than shouldn't overwhelm casual train fans, although hardcore steam buffs might be disappointed. Charman writes from the perspective of an experienced enthusiast, explaining how locomotives work to someone seriously considering volunteering at a heritage railway. As someone just beginning to "get" how locomotives work, I really appreciated this.
Beginning with a brief history of steam trains in the UK, this "manual" describes the basic components of a steam train (the boiler, "motion," running gear, cab, brakes, etc.) and how they work, the roles of the fireman and driver, the fine art of harnessing and controlling steam, and the tricky balancing act of actually driving the train. Unlike some recent Haynes titles, there's little fluff here - just "this is how a train works, and this is what it takes to keep one moving." By the end of the book, you'll understand what the regulator and reverser do, how to clean a boiler gauge glass, why you should keep the firehole door closed when going through a tunnel, what a worsted trimming looks like, and the appropriate time to open the cylinder drain cocks. There's also a useful four-page glossary, some nice diagrams, and lots of color photographs of modern steam trains in action, and closeup shots of dirty hands and well-oiled machinery.
I enjoyed this book, and learned quite a bit about how steam trains work from it, but calling it a "manual" is a bit of a stretch. "A Day in the Life of a Modern Steam Locomotive" might have been a more appropriate title. The author states that this isn't a "definitive" technical study, and gives a list of more detailed alternatives in the bibliography. It's also extremely UK-centric, with only a couple of references to other nations' steam trains. Although it could have been more detailed in places, "The Steam Locomotive Driver's Manual" is a nicely put together introduction to modern British heritage railway, which should please most people.
Perfect companion to Firing a Steam Locomotive. As a working Steam Engine worker/volunteer, the information is right on.
Great book describing steam history and some good stuff on how to get a grasp on their operation, care and maintenance. Mostly British based but the principles are pretty universal.
Very informative book, specially regarding narrow gauge tourist lines of England. Good quality printing. Good pictures.
It was a good book on steam locomotive
