PreSchool-K-Two books that are sure to become favorites because they tap into quintessential preschool experiences. In the first book, Gossie's red boots are missing. When they are found on the feet of Gertie, a smaller gosling, Gossie ends up sharing them. In the second story, Gertie is back, this time with blue boots of her own. She follows Gossie and does everything Gossie says, for a while. When she begins to do her own thing, her friend gets upset. By the end, the tables turn and Gertie leads Gossie to the food bowl, which they share, struggles forgotten. Dunrea's texts use easy words and simple, repetitive sentences, with a little bit of rhyming when it fits: "She wears them when she rides. She wears them when she hides" (Gossie). The ink-and-watercolor illustrations add little details that will reward observant children, such as a small insect in the background. Gossie's rural world is reassuringly child-sized, clear, and contained, as indicated by simple lines, primary colors, and focused illustrations on a white background. Because of the books' small size they will be better for one-on-one sharing than for group storytime. PreS. These small, square picture books introduce two little goslings in stories as unassuming yet satisfying as the art that illustrates them. Gossie features a little goose who loves wearing her bright red boots everywhere. One morning, they are missing. Searching everywhere, Gossie becomes increasingly distressed until she finds her boots on the feet of another, slightly smaller gosling. The last page shows the duo walking together, each wearing one red boot. In Gossie & Gertie, Gossie in her red boots and Gertie in blue ones are inseparable companions. Gossie, who expects Gertie to follow her lead, is increasingly annoyed when Gertie follows her own path. These beautifully designed volumes are simple enough for a two-year-old, yet they offer enough of a story to entertain older preschoolers as well. My son just LOVES this book. We read it every single night and have for the past....honestly I don't even know how long it's been. We have read it so many times that he's even changed Gossie's name to Monate and then changed it back again recently (he's 2). But for a parent, it is not a torturous re-read. And when they start to talk it's an easy one for them to repeat after you or describe pictures. Also it's so cheap. Get this for your kid. It's the cutest thing.
I love the Gossie series of books by Olivier Dunrea. This book is a simple, sweet tale of BFFs. I love that although Gossie seems to be the friend in charge to begin with that really both Gossie and Gertie have their own likes and dislikes and both love being with each other.
Finding books that young children will sit through is very hard and this one with the cute pictures that show so much feeling is very hard. This lovely book does the trick..bright pictures, simple sentences and good friends that is what this book provides.
I had checked this book out from the library and my 3 year old grand daughter just fell in love with the book. She would bring it to everyone to read to her. Since I had to purchase a textbook for myself (I decided to get her a copy of her very own,it is to be delivered today)because when it had to be returned to the library she started to cry,because she didn't want to see the book go.
We knew that this gem was a hit! Can't wait to see her face when she sees the book again.
Gossie & Gertie is one of the cutest books available - really darling. My grandson is 1 1/2 years old and chooses it for me to read to him first every time. Sweet pictures, sweet story of friendship.
This is well-loved book. Simple, beautiful, with a good message. This is the second book I've purchased, and two-year-old tested, from the series. Two more are ordered.
