Oliver Jeffers is the author-illustrator of many books for children, including Once Upon an Alphabet, which won a Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, and Lost and Found, which was a Nestlé Children’s Book Prize Gold Medal winner. He is also the illustrator of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Day the Crayons Quit and its follow-up, The Day the Crayons Came Home, both written by Drew Daywalt. Oliver Jeffers lives in Brooklyn.
Sam Winston is a fine artist whose work has been featured in many special collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, the Tate Galleries in London, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He works and lives in London.

Lovely story and art. I appreciate the word choice in the illustrations as I read the text even if I am not reading it aloud as part of the story. I recognize them and steal quick glances each time I read it discovering something new with every reading; as we pore over the images together, I become lost in the story much the same way my child is immersed in the world of images and possibilities. You don't need to know the references (or be able to read) to appreciate the imagery and this story; my child enjoys this book. Young ones will understand that the ocean is created from words. I appreciate that this book makes the metaphor visible for even the youngest audience. My three year old is enamored with the key and lock imagery on the cover and the concluding page. That was an awesome connection to make right before bed (don't want to spoil it).
This is one of the best children's books that I've seen in some time. It reinforces the beauty of literature in our lives. I will be buying more to give as gifts to fellow teachers.
I love the title and cover SO much, I expected more from the story. Love the illustrations, just wish there was more in the story.
