I love this practice book. I am a teacher and bought this for our daughter who has a very difficult time with word problems. These problems start out fairly simply and move to much more difficult, multi-step problems. The word problems are much like what will be on her exams next year in the 3rd grade which is ONE reason I purchased this edition. There IS higher level thinking skills for a 2nd-3rd grade student. Our daughter actually likes the format of this book and there is room beneath each problem to show the work of the student which is very important. We want our students to show HOW they reached the answer they reached and in doing so, the educator or parent will be able to see where and how they are thinking out their answer. I take the problem given and once she reaches the answer, create another, very similar problem on a separate sheet of paper to reinforce. We do ONLY 1-2 problems per night and if she struggles, I create the same sort of problem on paper and use that the next evening. In this way, the concept is being reinforced again. Also useful, when creating your own problem, use the name of your child IN the problem or the name of a pet, another family member, etc. This piques the interest for the child(ren). This has nothing to do with the actual review here but may help a parent who might come across this review. I teach special needs students and this works well for all students to grab their attention and keep it.

The print in this book is also fairly large and easy on the eyes for the reader. This is important for the younger set and/or a child with a learning disability in reading such as Dyslexia. Our daughter has Dyslexia and does not struggle with the print within this workbook. The creators of this book kept that in mind. I would recommend this book for practice at home. It will also save the life of your printer- which is the SECOND reason I chose to look here, on Amazon, for math word problem books. The 3rd? It's easier to come up with problems that are already DONE for you as opposed to trying to create them yourself.

The only suggestion I would have for the book? Larger spaces below each word problem to show the work of the student. Children like my daughter write larger than most and need more room to both show the strategy used as well as to create the number sentence/equation. In school, we want to see BOTH represented by the student.

My youngest daughter is struggling with math word problems lately. My husband and I have been patiently trying to explain to her the keywords that she cannot miss. So I turned for help. I went on Amazon to look for a tutoring book that I hope can help her.

So far, this book started with review work, that she knew already. She was motivated because she thought it was easy. As she continued, it was getting a little more challenging for her. She is struggling still, but she isn't giving up.

This book is right on track with what she is learning in class. I made the right choice in choosing this book.

I purchased this Kumon Word Problems Workbook on my own at full price. I wrote this review just to share my honest experience with other parents who may be going through the same thing with their child.

The math functions themselves seem appropriate for a 2nd grader to me--addition and subtraction with up to 3 digits, that kind of thing. There's a lot of mix of difficulty for the math involved; a single lesson can have a problem as easy as 5-3 and later on, a problem involving 2 or even 3 digit numbers.

For a word problems workbook, I would have expected problems that require more concept-level thinking (what operation is needed here?). The problems provide plenty of repeat practice for basic math functions, but there's not much mix of types of problems in each lesson, so the student isn't really required to do much critical thinking in figuring out what approach to use in solving the problem. Once the student solves the first problem or two, the rest of the problems are pretty predictable. I would prefer to have quicker math functions involved if it meant my daughter had to spend more time critically evaluating the path to the solution.

We started out using Grade 2 material as the actual Kumon program measures and takes a similar approach. It ensures the child has full mastery of the basics. Our son motored through this quickly though given it is self paced. In the course of a year he has moved from Grade 2 to Grade 5. It is a great way to enhance your child's learning.

East for your child to follow and get more confident with math word problems. This part of math was my daughters weakest section. Now she feels more confident in her answers and understand why she got the problem wrong and understand how to correct her mistake now and making better test scores.
