Has read several times and taught this book twice. Time well spent in reading.

Fantastic! I have been told I am a gifted leader for all of my life. I'm a business owner and employer. I am very involved in community organizations at a leadership level. My two most glaring weaknesses as a leader, parent, spouse, etc, are avoiding confrontation (which really hurts accountability and holds an organization back) and speaking more strongly and emotionally than I want when I feel passionate about something or when I have let the avoidance go too long and the problem has become too large. I need this book. As I read it, I saw myself described far too accurately, It was a real eye-opener. I studied it for a couple of weeks, and essentially created my own "rewrite" of it in very summary form.

I have to say that this is one of a very small handful of books that has made my "life-changer" list (the only other so far, outside of the scriptures, is Executive Toughness by Jason Selk). Absolutely phenomenal, if you are willing to learn and do what is taught. It's a long book, but is really just a handful of principles that will change the way you interact, increase your confidence, and improve your relationships and ability to communicate persuasively.

I have spent almost twenty years now working to build and repair relationships, trust, and functionality within teams, logging over 10,000 hours of interaction time with a huge variety of people in a wide variety of government, private sector, and nonprofit organizations. Before that, I spent 25 years as a manager and executive in a number of companies, including my own. In spite of all that diversity, the core issues and problems are depressingly the same, and most revolve around peoples' inherent ineffectiveness and lack of courage in communicating with each other. Patterson et al lay out a series of steps and techniques to take that if followed with the brain engaged, do make a dramatic difference. It is easy to make fun of the book's use of acronyms like CRIB, but from my perspective it is hard to ignore the effectiveness and power I have observed as people work to apply the techniques they describe. The book is essentially a metastudy (study of studies) and therefore research-based, not the idle musings of a single individual. Many people who have panned the book have been forced to read it, apparently, and came to it with a "Prisoner" mentality. If you are coming to this book of your own free will and with an ounce of curiosity, I think you'll more than likely find it very valuable. I cannot speak to the quality or value of Crucial Conversations seminars. FYI: I am not now, nor have I ever been, a Crucial Conversations trainer, nor in any way have I derived a penny from the sale of the book. (I have, however, bought many copies for my clients over the years...)

You may think this book is only for people who are negotiators - well, it's for everyone. There are so many things that we "should have" been taught when we were growing up, but nobody did, or even worse, we were given some poor communication skills. It's not our parents/teachers/friends (or anyone else we learned from) fault, because they weren't taught either.

Communicating is one of the most important aspects in our success, both personal and professional. This book not only teaches you how to effectively communicate, but also why we get stuck, what we normally do to resolve things, why they don't work (most of the time) and what we need to look for to insure that both you and the person your communicating with are not entering danger zones.

This book will change your life if you allow it. You just have to make the choice. Your only wish will be that you didn't read this sooner!

I highly recommend this book!
