I downloaded this book to help me get my First Lego League team up to speed on the new EV3 for this season. As some other reviewers note, this book is for use with the EDUCATION kit of the EV3, not the retail kit. I was trying to follow the programming examples and, like other reviewers have noted, got frustrated with the difficulty viewing the images of the programming. Even on my iPad Kindle app, I could not get a good picture. Frustrating. The book introduction indicates that you can download the code from the publisher website. It took me a bit to figure out (go to publisher site, register, search the book title, go to the webpage for the title, underneath the image of the cover there is a link "code files". Download that zip file!!! All the programs discussed in each chapter are there. Huge timesaver for me as a coach trying to go through and debug and check for me and then the kids when we are just getting started with the new EV3. With a group of elementary students, something I can use to demonstrate that works is better than hours of coding and debugging. Saves lots of frustration and disappointment. Thanks for having the code available. Saves me a full day of coding/debugging, because I always have coding errors that drive me crazy!
The EV3 set is new this year, and I was dying for some expert to write a book on it. This was the 1st book I bought on EV3 and eventually also bought Lego Mindstorms EV3 Laboratory. Both of these books are complementary.
I found this book useful and helpful. The Kindle edition is easy to read. The quick robot in this book truly is quick to build. In other older books, instructions for quick build robots are anything but quick to build.
It went through many basic components of programs that can be mixed and matched with each other. Gary does describe these as recipes but he does leave enough for the kids to figure out. He has a correcting gyro turn algorithm but proportionality is not included here but in the ultrasonic section (if I remember right). So a kid would have to figure out how to include those "proportional" correction components in their gyro turn algorithm.
I appreciate that - since ultimately these books are for kids to learn but not entirely be spoon fed. I think this book accomplishes that. It does leave you wanting more -- but gives enough for an enterprising kid to "discover" more himself.
The book was well written, however, it is meant for the "Education Lego EV3" version not the EV3 Mindstorms version that you can purchase at a store. Had my son read some chapters and when we only to have him come get me because "he couldnt find some pieces". He told me he recognized the piece from one that they use at school (the educaion version). After doing some research I come to find out why the piece was missing. You cannot built the robot described in the book because it has parts the EV3 Mindstorms "Available to the public" comes with. It was a waist of my money. Cant use it.
It is a good book which covers interesting program techniques. It brings you up to speed. It is originally ment for the education set. I use the home set but I bought an extra ultrasonic sensor and a gyro sensor. With these two extra sensors the matching between the book and the set is fine. With the two extra sensors you have a lot of extra posibilities. The images of the program code in the book are sometimes difficult to read (wiring). But you can download the program code from Packt.
For me there is only one remaining question: the program "SWITCHES" does not work. If anyone has an answer...........
The book gives a good look and explanation of the EV3 system and gives some project ideas without going into step-by-step instructions. It also gives some background and explanation of the Lego software you'll use to program your EV3 block.
This book isn't for you if you already have a working knowledge of the EV3 system, software or are looking for step-by-step projects to build.
