I learned so much reading "Over Edge..." that I cannot begin to list them here. Suffice it to say, I have a strong background in expeditionary literature, but this did not repeat much of what I already knew. When it did, it put it in a bright new context. Over and above all, the author demonstrated that Magellan was one motivated and mean motor scooter, and woe to those who got in his way. There has always been a great irony in his life and accomplishments, but make do doubt--locating then passing through the now Strait of Magellan was one of the supreme exploratory/charting accomplishments in history. Added to this, is the sheer strength of will and his seamanship. He found his destiny in the Philippines after a strange turn of wisdom that defeated him. This book is highly recommended. .

This is definitely not the story you were taught in school. Over the Edge of the World by Laurence Bergreen is a powerful page turner of the true story of what Magellan and his crew went through just to find nutmeg and cinnamon.

Many of the men brought back to life in Bergreens book are worthy of books just on their own stories.

The desperation and solitude, cut off for months at a time without seeing another single human being is enough to make the most dedicated introverts among us cringe. The men on Magellan's armada had no idea what they would come across. Boiling water at the equator? Magnetic islands that could pull nails from the ships if they got too close?

If you have a curiosity of how soft the comforts of our modern society has made us, look no further than this book. What these men endured and sacrificed for, the things that you can easily find on the grocery store shelves is mind boggling.

When a sailor goes the same direction as the wind, he is "on a run." The sailing ships of the age of discovery could do little else. They needed to wait for winds that would take them where they wanted to go. So it was that Ferdinand Magellan made the longest run, one that took him all the way from Spain to the Philippines via Cape Horn, extended by two dozen of his crew and one of his five ships, which, loaded with cloves made it all the back to Seville, the first people to circumnavigate the planet.
Few of us know much more than that about Ferdinand, but the author here does a very good job telling the rest of the story. This is a tale of tangled command and mutiny, of extreme hardship and perseverance, of hubris and revenge, of curiosity and discovery, all facets of the story lines long forgotten but brought back with clarity here. Curious about one of the first ventures meant to establish world trade between Europe and the East? This book is a good place to start.
