The Obstacle is the Way: The Ancient Art of Turning Adversity to Advantage

We give up too easily. With a simple change of attitude, what seem like insurmountable obstacles become once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. Ryan Holiday, who dropped out of college at nineteen to serve as an apprentice to bestselling 'modern Machiavelli' Robert Greene and is now a media consultant for billion-dollar brands, draws on the philosophy of the Stoics to guide you in every situation, showing that what blocks our path actually opens one that is new and better. If the competition threatens you, it's time to be fearless, to display your courage. An impossible deadline becomes a chance to show how dedicated you are. And as Ryan discovered as Director of Marketing for American Apparel, if your brand is generating controversy - it's also potentially generating publicity. The Stoic philosophy - that what is in the way, is the way - can be applied to any problem: it's a formula invented more than 2,000 years ago, whose effectiveness has been proven in battles and board rooms ever since. From Barack Obama's ability to overcome obstacles in his election races, to the design of the iPhone, the stoic philosophy has helped its users become world-beaters.

"The Obstacle is the Way" is one of those rare self-help / personal development books that actually can make a difference in your life. Unlike all those "you only have to believe hard enough / wish for something hard enough, and it will appear" books, this book shows you how to really get closer to your goals. And the author is also honest about one important fact: miracles don't just happen on their own, dreams don't just come true without any input from yourself. Ryan Holiday shows you what hinders you, and how you can use these obstacles to your advantage. I found this book to be well written and also quite useful. It was fantastic and refreshing to read a book that is written by an author who doesn't follow the mainstream "Secret". It also became quite clear that Mr Holiday has read quite a few good personal development books himself, and you might find yourself inspired to follow his example.

I read Ryan's work on Thought Catalog and eagerly look forward to his book reading list email each month - he is worthy of reading. However, I didn't get the same level of enthusiasm reading this book as I thought I would. High expectations on my part or a problem in the book I am not sure.

However, the source of the work is first class and the book has inspired me to go back and read the original Mediations, Montaigne essays and Seneca and for that I thank him.

I am still a fan but this book isn't quite 5 star material for mine.

This was worth the money, mostly as an introduction to the stoic philosophy. I'd advice people who are well read in stoicism to skip this, and everyone else to definitely get it. It is a ringing call for a more redoubtable spirit. It reminds me of The Road to Character by David Brooks in the way it dives into the lives of certain exemplars (though not to the same degree). This is a good book, but really only if you don't know stoicism.

Ryan Holiday gives a really interesting approach on how to tackle the obstacles that life throws at us. Based on Stoic fundamentals and giving examples throughout the history, he builds a framework that will help people to face their challenges in life.
It's an extremely inspiring and enlightening reading, that gives practical guidance and tips that I'll take with me for the rest of the life. I'd certainly recommend this book for everyone.
