Today I Will Fly! (An Elephant and Piggie Book)

Best-selling picture book creator Mo Willems is leaps into the early reader arena with the Elephant and Piggie series.  Not surprisingly, the books are hilarious, charming, and speak directly to kids.

The books feature two lovable and funny characters: an optimistic (and often reckless) pig and a cautious, pessimistic elephant.  Children who sat on their parents’ laps to have Pigeon read to them will eagerly take the plunge with these books to start reading on their own.  Each book has been vetted by an early learning specialist.  These sweet and surprising stories are a much-needed breath of fresh air in the early reader arena.

Today, I Will Fly! is the funny introduction to the characters.  Piggie is determined to fly.  But Gerald the elephant knows that's impossible--isn't it?

*Starred Review* Graphic novel influences have reached into most areas of children's book publishing; here, they crop up in a classic genre-the friendship--duo easy reader-and chalk up yet another success for two-time Caldecott Honor winner Willems. The basic approach is familiar from Willems' previous books, especially Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! (2003). It's as if each page were one frame of a comic strip, characters zip in and out of white space, proffer speech-bubble remarks, and express emotion through spot-on body language. Today I Will Fly juxtaposes Piggie's optimistic ambitions with stodgier Elephant's naysaying. There are also plenty of quirky details to reward repeated readings, including the charmingly incongruous mystery of Piggie's real name (Elephant's, we learn, is Gerald). Accessible, appealing, and full of authentic emotions about what makes friendships tick, this will put a contemporary shine on easy reader collections. Vying for their affections is that irrepressible pigeon, who, still utterly in character, finds his way onto the endpapers. Jennifer Mattson

If the author is MO Willems, the only question you need ask is what age will love this? Some of the books that are not part of a series may fit any age. The Knuffle bunny books are good for early readers thru 7 or 8 year olds. The Pigeon books are good to read aloud to any age until the older child is reading them to the younger one. Cat the Cat books are good for read aloud until the child is demanding to read it aloud to you.

The Piggy and Elephant books are absolutely wonderful for read aloud (with exagerated facial and verbal expressions to emphasize feelings well into the read aloud back to you stage. My seven year old grandson passed thru these stages and into taking the whole pile to bed with him so he could read himelf to sleep amid giggles and smiles. Not only are they charming and humerous, as all Mo Willems books are, they are wonderful tools for showing and talking about simple and complex feelings. A neighbor child who seems to be autistic, eagerly brings me any piggy book to read to her, over and over. That is why I think these books may be especially helpful for any child having trouble identifying or expressing emotions. The simple line drawings make the feelings very easy to identify, and the rediculous but realistic situations provide wonderful occasions for experiencing simple but exaggerated emotions.

As my grandkids outgrow these books, they carefully pack them away to read to their children. Thank you Mo Willems.

PS. Some other books which delight a subtle sense of humor are written by David Weisner. The best is Tuesday.

I love everything else I've read by Mo Williams to date, but this one kind kind of puts me off.

Piggie decides she will fly. Then elephant spends half the book telling Piggie she will not. It just strikes me as oddly negative every time I read it to my kid.

I would love love love these books this author is just absolutely amazing, he grabs the kids and makes it so that they don't want to put the book down. My child is even trying to read these books I'm truly enjoying it and my husband and I are to be purchasing all of them that he has put out highly recommend
