Elmer the Elephant is a wonder seires of books that teach children to get a long and it is ok to just be yourself. I teach school so this was a wonderful book I used to teach about getting along with others and we need to help our neighbors when they need it.
The story starts out with the elephants mad because the hippos are using their watering hole. They run to Elmer to try to get him to make them leave. They do not want to share the water with the hippos. When Elmer finds the hippos he learns that their water had dired up and they needed the water hole in order to survie , since hippos have to live in water. Elmer goes back to the elephants and explains what has happens and asks them what if that happened to the elephants. The elephants are still not happy and want them gone.
Elmer decides to find out why the hippos water dired up. He started down the dried water bed and soon finds that a rock slide closed off the water supply. He goes back to the elephants and tells them what he found. They say great the hippos can move the rocks and get the water flowing again. Elmer tells the elephants that the hippos would not be able to move the rocks by them selves . They would need the elephnats to help. They could use their trunks to move the rocks and the hippos could roll it away once it was off the pile. In working together the elephants helped the hippos get the water flowing again and they leraned that working together was much easier than working alone. They also learned that the hippos were fun to be around even though they were different from the elphants.
This book has so many good teaching points about tolerance, not judging others and team work just to name a few. I love this book and so glad I decided to buy this book for my classroom. The kids loved it and learned a lot at the same time.
My two-year-old son absolutely adores Elmer, the patchwork elephant and when we had to travel recently, I got him a bunch of the books in Kindle format to distract him on the plane ride. Elmer and the Hippos was a great addition to the series. It's one of the more complicated Elmer stories (there is a separate subseries for younger readers that focuses on basic themes like colors, counting, weather, etc.) and deals with the themes of sharing, helping others and overcoming prejudices. The artwork is beautiful and my son loved the story.
The Hippos' river dries up and they come to join the elephants. Although the elephants are initially unhappy about the Hippos, with Elmer's help, they elephants agree to help the Hippos and they all work together to solve the problem. Good lessons in a nice format with pretty art. An overall winner.
I love the Elmer series! It is new to me but I am crazy about Elmer! I am a an kindergarten teacher and I love that Elmer is different and that he is a star among the elephants. I love that he is friends with all of the animals and accepted by all. Good lessons for my students!
Thanks
Elmer's adventures really are a must for youngsters. Delightful pictures and a simple understandable storyline make the Elmer series of books a real treasure
