This volume presents the recent developments in the field of arsenic in soil and groundwater. Arranged into nine sections, the text emphasizes the global occurrences of arsenic in the environment, particularly on its source, pathways, behavior, and effects it has on soils, plants, water, animals, and humans. It also covers the diverse issues of arsenic in the mining environment, arsenic emanating from hydrothermal springs, and the geochemical modeling of arsenic adsorption to oxide surfaces. Finally, the text includes different cost effective removal mechanisms of arsenic from drinking water using natural red earth, solar oxidation, and arsenic oxidation by ferrrate.
Written in simple English, and few technical terms, the book is designed to create interest within the countries with occurrences of arsenic in drinking water with
·an update the current status of knowledge on the dynamics of natural arsenic from the aquifers through groundwater to food chain and efficient techniques for arsenic removal.
·serve as a standard text book for graduate, postgraduate students and researchers in the field of Environmental Sciences and Hydrogeochemistry as well as researchers, environmental scientists and chemists, toxicologists, medical scientists and even for general public seeking an in-depth view of arsenic which had been classed as a carcinogen.
·bring awareness, among administrators, policy makers and company executives, on the problem and to improve the international cooperation
专业书评 The presence of arsenic in the environment causes severe health risk with increased incidences of cancer in may regions of the world, making it to a global problem. Today, the greatest part of the world population depends on groundwater for drinking, and in many regions groundwater contains arsenic above the drinking water standards and thus raise public health concern in both developed and developing countries. The book gives a state-of-art overview of the recent developments in the fields or arsenic research. it deals with the geogenic and anthropogenic arsenic sources, the occurrence of arsenic and their distinct species in soils, and ground- and surface waters in naturally and anthropogenically affected ecosystems, and discusses mobilization, and transport as function of changing geochemical conditions. Health effects, resulting from human arsenic uptake through arsenic-contaminated drinking water and food are addressed. The book comprises chapters outlining innovative approaches for arsenic removal from contaminated soil using phytoremediation, and low-cost remediation methods fro removal of arsenic from contaminated water using locally available sorption materials. The contribution ion this book include a wide range of considerations of arsenic from the molecular to the landscape scale. It concludes global and regional perspectives of the ext3nt and severity of arsenic contamination in difference sectors of human life and the need of an increase of the attention to this problem.
