Essay:
The use of electronic devices, such as laptops, tablets, and particularly mobile phones, in class settings is a topic of debate. For that matter, there are clearly both pros and cons, depending on different situations. These days, people are left wondering whether these internet-connected gadgets can benefit undergraduates or they are best tucked away.
On the positive side, these electronic devices, if properly managed, can be used as an effective tool to help college students learn in the classroom. Pedagogically, there is value to using these gadgets in class as more curriculum materials are delivered digitally to students on their personal cell phones, to begin with. Some teachers even create Twitter message platforms that students can use during classroom discussions to share thoughts and ideas. This can be especially beneficial for those who might not be comfortable speaking in class. As well, teachers can take advantage of cell phones by providing the class with resources about a topic. It is expected that allowing students to access these resources in class can encourage participation in discussions. That being said, it is important for teachers to set ground rules and keep a close eye on how electronic devices are being used when they decide to use them as part of their lessons. Otherwise, cell phones or any other digital device should not be allowed in class.
On the negative side, the use of electronic devices in class can lead to a distracting learning environment. For example, when students use their cell phones to check social media and text their friends in class, it can cause disruptions in class, particularly if the teacher is constantly telling them to turn their devices off. Furthermore, these devices that connect with the Internet can be used by students to access to information while taking a test, leading to cheating. Even if one is not caught, this can lead one having a poor understanding of the material in the future, and is unfair to students who have studied so hard to do well. In addition, many college students easily become addicted to playing Internet games, thus causing them to pay less attention in class and miss important lessons. According to recent findings, students who have the habit of using cell phones in class for non-academic reasons are more likely to have poor class performance, as indicated by their final grades.
In conclusion, these devices may hinder or support the learning environment, depending on course context and how classroom policies are written. To ban or not to ban smartphones in class is the question. But is there any smart answer?
