Essay:
Nowadays, people seem to realize that knowing only one’s mother tongue is not enough. It may be said that bilingualism is a major asset in an increasingly interconnected world. While learning a foreign language is of practical use for traveling or working in a foreign country, psychologically it will make people smarter by giving their brain a boost.
It certainly makes practical sense to learn a foreign language in order to travel or work in a foreign country. When traveling, language is the best introduction to a new culture and this increased cultural awareness provides for enriched interpersonal experiences such as building friendships, appreciating different ethnic values, and discovering unique histories and traditions. Therefore, having the ability to engage with many kinds of people can go a long way in better understanding and tackling global challenges, and in truly making oneself a citizen of the world. Speaking of a job in a foreign country, more and more people recognize the importance of learning an additional language to expand one’s career opportunities. If one’s C.V. includes fluency in a second language, one’s chances of landing a job are greater than for people who know only one language.
Psychologists claim that people become smarter if they learn a foreign language. It is mainly because those who speak two or more languages have significantly better overall cognitive capacities than those who speak only one. As a result, there are obvious signs of increased memory, improved problem-solving, critical thinking, and planning skills, as well as an enhanced ability to multi-task. To explain this in terms of psychology, one’s brain is being challenged to switch between languages, as well as to receive input in multiple forms, and then negotiate the meaning. This implies that learning a foreign language is a very good workout for one’s brain, and consequently one’s cognitive abilities will become better across all areas—not just in the language classes. In other words, learning a foreign language will pay off.
To sum up, learning a foreign language is not only useful when traveling working in a foreign country but also it will enable one to become smarter. The benefits of being bilingual are both practical and psychological. With more languages, one can be at home anywhere.
