  Essay:

For the overall wellbeing of its people, progress of a country must be a balance between economic and human progress. While economic progress can create wealth, it has no sense to talk about economic progress without taking into account its contribution to human progress. It is relevant for governments to think that economic progress is very important, but other types of progress focusing on human progress are important too.

Is economic progress the fundamental goal of a country? The answer is yes because economic progress means a rise in real GDP (Gross National Product) and is one of the most important indicators of a healthy economy. Then, one of the biggest impacts of long-term growth of a country is that it has a positive impact on national income, which in turn improves the standard of living. Among other benefits for a country, economic progress has the indirect potential to alleviate poverty, as a result of a simultaneous increase in job opportunity and labor productivity. Furthermore, high economic progress also leads to extra tax revenues for fiscal spending, which can be used to develop a country’s infrastructure and public services. What is more, countries with positive rates of economic progress will create a virtuous cycle, which for many governments is the most important goal.

Economic progress creates wealth for a country, but it is not the only goal for governments because equally important for people’s wellbeing is human development. For that matter, economic progress has to be a vehicle that supports all aspects of human progress ranging from level of income to working conditions to access to healthcare to life expectancy. To be more specific, the way wealth is being distributed is crucial to citizens’ wellbeing in the sense that large social inequalities destroy a country’s development and downgrade people’s quality of life. That is to say, if wealth is being distributed on just a few people, it will never contribute to the development of the countries that generate it. Unfortunately, a country can be progressing economically at the expense of a decline in human progress. And this is why human progress is as important a goal as economic progress.

In conclusion, economic progress is important of course, but it is not everything that provides people with overall wellbeing if human progress is being sacrificed. For governments, it is important to create wealth through economic progress, and it is also important to distribute that wealth for human progress. Balance is key.
