  Writing Topic:

To what extent will migration from the developing world to the developed world become a social and political issue in the 21st century? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

  Example Essay (Jeenn Lee Hsieh):

Modern migration would become a social and political issue as an increasing number of people move from the developing world to the developed world. In this new century, job opportunities and better incomes are major pulling factors. For better or for worse, some social and political changes are inevitable.

The migration trend is considered to be largely beneficial to the host country, but not without creating a certain degree of social anger. When a country is confronting a rising tide of foreign immigrants, migration gradually becomes a social problem because local workers are losing jobs to foreigners who are hired at much lower wages. In other words, that may cause unemployment rates to be up. This being the case, not everybody is happy about labor imports, despite the fact that foreign workers usually come to fill the gaps in labor shortages. By and large, sentiments of discontent are growing in some areas, particularly where illegal immigrants (mostly from countries of different customs and faiths and living styles) are seeding social unrest. In more extreme cases, anti-immigration activists choose to take to streets, protesting; and it is as if a time bomb were about to go off anytime.

Usually an explosive social issue can easily turn into a political problem. At Parliament, opinions are divided over policies about the wisdom of relaxed immigration policies supposed to benefit many sectors. Under public pressure, new and unfriendly measures are often introduced to stop the immigration wave. Accordingly, a series of actions attempt to make political sense of labor-related problems ranging from social security to housing shortages to medical care. Unfortunately, illegal immigrants are forced to leave as a drastic measure in tune with political voices. No wonder, the immigration problem always remains a subject for more heated political debates.

On the whole, the phenomenon of migration tends to cut both sides--positively in the economic context, but negatively in terms of certain social and political considerations. As people move from one country to another in pursuit of personal success, the 21st century will continue to experience social and political restlessness. However, it waits to be seen exactly to what extent the migration issue will change the social and economic landscape in the developed world.
