Essay:
Research after research has shown that young students should be allowed to play video games to a certain extent. While content of video games matters, the question is about how much time is too much time and how young is too young to be on the screen? There are no simple answers to the question, which may be why the issue is so contentious, and even confusing sometimes.
Regarding children at school ages, playing video games for a limited amount of time may be beneficial because it could inspire their interest and make their studies more efficient. According to a recent study, for primary school-aged children, it is beneficial to keep the screen time to under an hour each day, and teens to under two hours per day. Besides watching young students’ screen time, it is also important for parents to monitor the content of their children’s video games, of course. This implies that the violent and explicit stuff should be kept away from the very immature young minds, and that suitable video games can be great for fun, for stress-relief, and for reactivating children’s educational curiosity and learning skills. Additionally, the same study has suggested that children under the age of two should not be playing video games—or watching them, and children under the age of five are better off without them, too.
That being said, playing video games too much time may be detrimental because it could distract young students from studies, not to mention being a waste of time. Some bad consequences of this kind could become even worse if the content of video games is worthy of suspicion. Among other findings associated with negative effects, experts have warned against students playing high-violence video games for two or more hours daily, saying that playing these games increases risk-taking, sensation seeking and rebelliousness; so much so, the results are linked to increases in alcohol use, cigarette smoking, aggression, delinquency and risky sex. So, apart from being a waste of time, such video games could be addictive and could rid students of attention to studies for a long, long period of time. For these reasons, young students should refrain from playing video games of potentially dangerous content.
Finally, it has become clear that playing video games could be good or bad, depending on the amount of time being spent on the screen as well as on the content being consumed by young students of different ages. In all events, playing time should be limited and the content of video games is king. Following this advice, young students should be allowed to play video games for the potential benefits rather than for the potential drawbacks.
