Making new friends should not mean losing old ones, both types of friends being important to your feeling happy in life. For that matter, it is necessary to harmonize relations with the new and the old. Typically, there are benefits of keeping old friends and making new friends.

On the one hand, making new friends can make vast contributions to your happiness. The great thing about new friends is that they can bring you a sense of well-being by introducing new perspectives, new experiences, new ideas, new opportunities and new social networks into your life. When you make friends with someone new, you never know how close of a friend he or she may become. In fact, if you close yourself off to new friendships, you may miss out brightening up up your life due to the possibility that a new friend may turn out to be a long-lasting valuable friend. So, speaking of friends, it is not so much about whom you have known longest as it is about who came, and never left your side. Incidentally, you do not really realize in advance how well any new friendship will work out, do you?

On the other hand, it is very important to maintain old friendships for your well-being. Often there is no happier feeling than having old friends who love you, have your back, and most of all, have fun. They accept you for who you are, flaws and all, and reinforce your identity as a person who matters. After years of experiences together and inside jokes, old friends have seen you at your best and at your worst, known your likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. Usually your old friends are your constants and the ones who have always been there for you and will always support you through thick and thin. Probably that is why in this rapidly changing world, long-term relationships should be valued as shared (golden) experiences that no new friends (even with silver rings) could replace.

In sum, people come into your life for a season, a reason or a lifetime, and you need both new and old friends to keep things balanced in order for you to be happy. Both old friends and new friends can be important because you may need the former to help you grow old with fun and the latter to stay young with energy. It is as the cliche goes: "Make new friends but keep the old; one is silver and the other gold." (Essay created by Jeenn Lee Hsieh 谢振礼原创托福文 ielts360toefl@163.com 微信: ielts360toefl )
