Sample Essay:
It pays for students to study mathematics and philosophy in order to better face the complexity of adult life because such important subjects can make you smarter. After all, young people ought to have objectives and rules to solve problems of life as a compulsory game. Philosophy is a game with objectives and no rules, just mathematics is a game with rules and no objectives, with each having the other in mind.
More basic than anything else, the rules of mathematics are essential to the study of other fields of science--physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, etc. As can be seen, mathematical problems abound in daily life. For many jobs, mathematical proficiency is also required in the workplace. It is due to the fact that doing mathematics teaches patterns of problem-solving. And that is why no school curriculum should exclude the study of mathematics. Just because some people are not interested in mathematics, it does not mean they can afford not to accept the subject as compulsory, be it difficult or not.
Being a complex subject, philosophy forces people to expand the way of thinking about life. They can learn critical thinking skills and also reflect on big questions, ranging from ethics to politics to religion. Through rational argument, or "love of wisdom," they are better able to reason on the right thing to do. The reason is that the objectives of philosophy include obtaining insights into the difficult game of life. So, people should not delay the study of philosophy when young nor weary of it when old. Put simply, it is always time to learn philosophy to be enlightened in the game of life wisely with worthy purposes.
Studying the rules of mathematics and the objectives of philosophy is vital to living more intelligently, and it may be what education largely means to people. Like it or not, such skills can make a difference in people's lives now becoming increasingly complex. Besides, there is nothing to lose by getting smarter one way or the other.
