  IELTS Essay Topic:

Are famous people, such as movie stars and popular music signers, treated fairly by the media? Should they be given more privacy, or the price of their fame may be regarded as an invasion into their private lives? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience to support your opinion.

  Example Essay (Jeenn Lee Hsieh):

Most gifted people wish to be famous as well as to be rich; and, once they become famous, they try to be even more so by using journalists to promote themselves in an attempt to shine in the galaxies. As often as not, the victim images of celebrities being "tortured or crucified" by the media are not what they seem like. As a matter of fact, most celebrities at today's information age are treated just like celebrities who are aware of the price for being famous.

The price which celebrities are paying for staying famous is fair enough--the media's invasion into their privacy. As an illustration, you may just look at this picture to understand the irony. They work hard all their lives to become well-known, then wear dark glasses, as if to avoid being recognized by the media. Such exposure of private lives, more intentionally than not, is characteristic of the Hollywood obsession of fame along with money. In all likelihood, most celebrities are actually looking for it without admitting it. Further, they enjoy making breaking news: flirting romances and love affairs, extravagance and drug abuse, hasty marriages and divorces, sex addiction and drunk driving, to name only a few. Now you get the picture, don't you?

That said, it is clear that the rise of international celebrities particularly in acting and in popular music is largely due to the massive scale of the media industries, enabling them to be viewed more often and in more places. In contrast, real privacy also carries a price that most famous people cannot afford so long as they desire to be glorified in the spotlight. Perhaps, the last thing they want in the world is allow their names and faces to be ignored and not to be seen any more, not unlike fading stars about to pass away in darkness. At this point, the media outlets actually serve to boost the images of those who must thrive on fame or infamy or both to be able to get to where they wish to be. Without a doubt, an invasion to the private lives could not have been possible without their having left signposts on purpose because ordinary housewives and family men would not have to worry about the media.

Paradoxically, there may be one price for using the journalists and another price for not so doing, and it is up to celebrities to decide. In most cases, however, famous people could not be so famous were it not for the media. Those professionals in the media are not to blame because usually they do that for free, giving the news-hungry audience that kind of information which can feed the gossip world.
