Essay Question:
Climate change is now an accepted threat to our planet, but there is not enough political action to control pollution. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience to support your opinion.
Example Answer (Jeenn Lee Hsieh):
Much is known about the causes and effects of global warming, but not enough joined political actions have so far been taken to look for the solutions. Climate change is now an accepted threat to our planet as our world is now less protected than it used to be before the Industrial Revolution. In this respect, the global future seems anything but certain, depending on whether all sectors involved are fighting a winning battle or a losing battle.
Signs of climate change are too obvious to be ignored, but too little if not too late has been done to combat the global warming. Scientists warn that the "greenhouse" effects as a consequence of air pollution have caused global temperatures to rise, although very slowly and slightly. This phenomenon may have contributed to more extreme weather conditions from prolonged droughts to severe floods. To make things worse, researches say that several ice shelves in the Antarctica have retreated and collapsed in the past decades. This means, among other dangers, that sea levels are rising through the thermal expansion of water and even the melting of glaciers on the planet. Such warnings being clear, we cannot afford to wait and see what will happen next.
Probably, the global battle to reduce the "greenhouse" effects from human activities has not been lost, at least not yet. One good news is that there is an increasing awareness around the world of the problems (like ozone-depletion) linked to the global warming. According to international news reports, as of 1997 more than 160 countries had signed what is known as the Montreal Protocol, committing to cut use of CFCs by half. Since then, concentrations of ozone-depletion chemicals seem to have started decreasing. Another good news is that ozone-depletion is said to be reversible, meaning the damaged ozone layer supposed to protect the planet may even return to its original state sometimes in the future. Of course, there is a long way to go before actually winning the battle.
In our joined forces to save the world from the alarming effects of the global warming, we had better hope for the best rather than prepare for the worst to come. As the threat of climate change is real, so much be actions from around the world to fight the climate change. Otherwise, if the worse comes to the worst, we will have onely ourselves to blame.
