Often being lucky is something like having always good weather when the road to success is under construction. However, after careful planning, construction of a successful life requires hard work even under most favorable circumstances. This means that luck of course has something to do with success; but, rain or shine, success is next to impossible without sufficient 'sweat and toil', so to speak.

It is easy to blame failures in life due to lack of luck, as if most successful stories were told about just a few lucky persons. Seemingly, successful people happen to be lucky people who do not necessarily have to work hard in order to move from ambitions to achievements. Nevertheless, more often than not, good luck may actually come from good work being done with strong motivation and uncommon patience. Indeed, it is logical to think success as combining careful planning and hard work, awaiting the lucky star to appear eventually on the horizon. So, while being lucky alone may perhaps bring about good fortunes worthy of secret envy, only great successes built on hard work deserve public admiration. Given that being lucky may imply taking risks, chances are that hard-working people are usually favored to win the race in real life, carefully going from where they are to where they want to be.

The conventional wisdom about becoming successful is not without no-nonsense cliches, such as "No pains, no gains", "Heaven helps those who help themselves" and so on. Among other sayings, one seems to be particularly relevant: "Success belongs to the prepared mind". This refers to the importance of readiness to receive luck when it comes to pass. For example, although it is lucky for one to have a special talent in music or sports, one would remain only a talent rather than a great success, if one should fail to work hard and plan carefully to develop that potential gift. In other words, hardly could one achieve more by ironically working less, leaving the matter of success entirely to throwing dice with fate.

Life as a journey may be full of ups and downs, and it is always wise to pave the way to success through constant efforts. By so doing, timely luck is likely to join forces with hard work in building the road to success against many odds. After all, hard work is the rule of becoming successful, admitting that there are some exceptions to the rule. (Essay created by Jeenn Lee Hsieh, ielts360toefl@hotmail.com )
