High school can be a tough time for unmotivated students who happen to find a school subject to be far from being a piece of cake, so to speak. If motivation is what effective learning is all about, it behooves educators to let students understand the relevance of the subject outside of school, in addition to marking their grades of academic performance in school. Hence, the best way to increase students' interest in a subject is toward kindling motivation for both short-term and long-term goals that match their personal pride and ambition.
Students' achievements are usually measured by their grades, subject by subject. Of course, this kind of individual success is a reflection of the student's overall attitude, likes or dislikes, about a particular subject in the learning environment. After all, it is about personal pride in doing things well since students can get great satisfaction in a task well done and gain a valuable sense of competence, which in itself can motivate further effort. Such desire for accomplishment on a subject can find expression not only in making comparisons of their own grades or progress with others, but also in competition with oneself by sometimes setting their own standards and rate of working. This indicates that 'peer pressure' alone can be a source of motivation for students to study a specific subject, without teachers having to explain how that subject will help their lives outside school. In short, tangible rewards in school are short-term goals worthy of their interest, considering that under no circumstances would students like to get 'flunked' or be called 'eggheads'.
No less important, students' motivations to study different subjects earnestly are also related to their different ambitions for the time to come. In this light, teachers can help students have a better idea of what they want to achieve outside of school, including family expectations and job prospects. Normally, students will be encouraged to work hard early and diligently, even when it comes to studying a subject somewhat boring or more difficult. It is because students might value learning as a way of building a future that will bring wealth, prestige, power and other benefits. Teachers on their part can increase students' interest in a subject through using more strategies than simply giving good grades, in addition to corresponding praise, esteem, recognition and family approval. So, here lies the educators' responsibility to make it clear the significance of a subject because it matters in the future. Without any doubt, it is crucial for teachers to help keep students' dreams alive.
In terms of learning a subject, most students are motivated by enjoying personal pride in doing well in school and by having a strong desire to succeed later in life. For that matter, a common role that teachers should play is to increase students interest in a variety of required subjects. To make that happen, there is no better way than to link the success of students' success in school to their future success outside of school.
