Rain in My Old Home

Written by Tang in 1933

Spring in the south is known to be rainy. During this season, it  36   rains there but it remains wet for seven or eight days on end. Dwellers in Shanghai, who usually do not feel the need for rain, will be 37   with having to confine themselves in their close quarters when outside it is gloomy with rain. While in the open, seeing to mountains, nor lakes, nor rain-drenched soft green leaves, you’ll find nothing comparable to a fine day. Sometimes,   38  , a rich man’s car flashing past may splash you all over with  39  .

I remember when I first came to Shanghai to  40  school six or seven years ago, I used to be so very busy with my homework that I often had to sit up   41  into the night. As it happened to be a rainy year, I was often disturbed by the pitter-patter of rain beating down  42  the window and roof. Indeed, I dislike rain very much.

But that’s something which can be experienced in Shanghai only. I’ll never forget the days when I 43   the spring rain in my native place as a small child. One spring, together with two companions, I  44  a small boat to a town let ten li away to see a village opera. At midnight, after the  45  was over, we  46   in a rain on the way home. The rain beating on the awning(雨蓬) gave off a  47  sound, as if with musical rhythm and cadence(节拍). My companions began to sing, to the accompaniment of the drip-drop, the local folk song In a Boat by a Bridge on a Rainy Night. It was truly fascinating.

Directions: Complete the following passage by filling in each blank with one word that best fits the context.

For many Englishman there can never be any discussion48.          to who is the world’s greatest dramatist. Only one name can possibly suggests itself to(浮现在心头) him: 49.          of William Shakespeare. Every Englishman has some knowledge, 50.          slight, of the works of our greatest writer. All of us use words, phrases and quotations(引语) from Shakespeare’s writings that have become part of the common property of English-speaking people. Most of 51.          time we are probably unaware 52.          the source of the words we use.

Shakespeare, more perhaps than any 53.          writers, made full use of the great resource of the English language. There is probably no better way for a foreigner(or an Englishman) to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language54.   by studying the various ways in 55.      Shakespeare used it.

Part III Reading comprehension (30 marks)

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage.

A

Several animal species including gorillas in Rwanda and tigers in Bangladesh could risk extinction if the impact of climate change and extreme weather on their habitats is not addressed, a UN report showed on Sunday.

Launched on the sidelines of global climate negotiations in Durban, the report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation shows how higher temperatures, the rise in sea levels, deforestation and excessive land use have damaged the habitats of certain species, especially in Africa.

"Many ecosystems have already been stressed by increasing population, historical and recent deforestation, unsustainable management practices and even invasive species," Eduardo Rojas-Briales, assistant director general at the FAO's forestry department, said at the launch of the report.

The most affected areas include mountains, isolated islands and coastal areas, which limit the possibilities for animals to migrate elsewhere and create new habitats.

"The remaining populations become enclosed in very small ecosystems, they have inbreeding (近亲交配)problems ... and at the end these species may disappear," he added.

Other examples of affected animals included elephants in Mali, lions in the Serengeti and crocodiles in Malawi.

The report said an estimated 20-30 percent of plant and animal species will be at higher risk of extinction due to global warming and a significant proportion of endemic species may become extinct by 2050 as a consequence.

Other consequences could include the spread of invasive species and infectious diseases, it said.

The report urges more focus on restoration of damaged ecosystems, especially those key to tackling (应对)climate change such as mangroves(红树林), inland waters, forests, savannahs(非洲大草原) and grasslands.

The FAO also called for the creation of migration corridors for animals in areas where their movement was constrained.

The organisation said while more resources were flowing to biodiversity conservation, more action at the government and policy level was needed.

It also urged local communities to develop projects that mitigate the impact of climate change on wildlife, naming eco-tourism activities as an example.

56Why are mountains, isolated islands and coastal areas becoming the most affected areas, according to the passage?

ABecause animals there are more likely to migrate to other places and create new habitats.

BBecause of higher temperatures and the rise in sea levels there.

CBecause it is less possible for animals to move to other places and create new habitats.

DBecause of the spread of invasive species and infectious diseases.

57What does the underlined word “mitigate” mean?

       AMaking something become less serious.

       BMaking use of.

       CDeveloping.

DMoving from one place to another.

58All of the following are true EXCEPT “         ”.

AThe increasing population, historical and recent deforestation, unsustainable management practices and even invasive species have put great pressure on the ecosystem.

BWe should pay more attention to the restoration of damaged ecosystems

CAll the plants and animal species will be at higher risk of distinction due to global warming by 2050.

DFor animals living in areas where their movements was limited, we should create more corridors for them.

59What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?

AThere are no resources available to conserve the biodiversity.

BIt is the local communities rather than the government that should take measures to protect the species from extinction.

CIt is better for the local communities to restrict eco-tourism activities.

DThe government should take some measures and some policies should be made to protect the biodiversity though more sources were being used for it.

60What is the best title for the passage?

       AAnimals at risk

       BGlobal warming and its consequences

       CSolutions to animal distinction

DAnimals at risk due to climate change

Chinese media and Internet users on Monday decried(谴责)a lack of morals in society after a toddler was struck twice – by two different vans-and left bleeding on the road as more than a dozen bystanders did nothing to help the seriously injured girl.

The incident, captured by a surveillance camera and aired by Southern Television Guangdong (TVS), showed the two-year-old girl was knocked down and run over by a white van on a narrow market street on the afternoon of Oct. 13, in Foshan City of Guangdong Province.

The driver fled the scene of the accident, leaving the girl to bleed on the sidewalk. Over the next six minutes, more than a dozen people walked by the girl, yet not one individual did anything to help her. The girl was then his a sccond time by another van before an clderly trash collector came to her aid and brought the attention of the girl’s mother, according to the vidco and eyewitnesses.

Doctors said that the girl, who was put on life support after being hospitalized, remains in a deep coma. The girl's parents, who are migrants living in the city, are now with her.

Police said the drivers of both vehicles have been arrested. However, the apathy of the bystanders shown in the video has shocked the public, as Internet forums have scethed with anger, and people are questioning the morality of society.

High moral standards were once triumphed as national pride in China where individuals known for selflessly helping others were adored by the public.

But in recent years, the perception(观念)of a decline of morals has become a hot topic as profit and materialism are perceived to be affecting society’s values.

On Sept. 2. an 88-year-old man in central China collapsed, his face striking the pavement. Yet, no one came to his aid, and he ended up choking to death on the blood from his nose.

Some have linked the absence of good Samaritans (模范人物)to a previous case in which a man trying to help an elderly woman who fell was accused of harming her.

A strong chorus of opinion on the Internet says laws should exempt(免除)Samaritans from liability(责任), yet laws themselves cannot solve society’s morality dilemma.

Cao Lin, a China Youth Daily commentator, said in a signed article published on Monday that the worry of liability should not be an excuse for not helping, and this case exposes the decline of humanity in Chinese society.

61According to the passage, what would happen if someone helped others selflessly in the past?

AHe/ she would be condemned by the public.

BHe/ she would be awarded by the government.

CThe public would feel proud of him/ her and thus showed love and respect for him/ her

DHe/ she would have to worry about liability.

62Which of the following is TRUE about this passage?

ANobody helped the girl who was struck twice by two different vans.

BThe toddler died immediately after she was hit a second time.

CHigh moral standards were once regarded as national pride in China.

DJournalists from TVS captured the incident by using a camera.

      Apeople’s perceptions                            Bprofit and materialism

Cthe apathy of bystanders                       Dthe morals of society

64According to Cao Lin, what is the fundamental reason for not helping the girl?

       AThe worry of liability.

BLack of laws that exempt Samaritans from liability.

CThe decline of humanity in society.

DThe other two cases mentioned in the article-the case or an 88-year-old man and the case where a man trying to help an elderly woman who fell was accused or harming her.

65Where is the article most probably taken from?

AA fashion magazine.                            BA news report.

CA science fiction.                                 DAn education column.

A funny thing happened on the way to the communications revolution: we stopped talking to one another.

I was walking in the park with a friend recently, and his cell phone rang, interrupting our conversation.  There we were, walking and talking on a beautiful sunny day and... I became invisible, absent from the conversation.

The telephone used to connect you to the absent. Now it makes people sitting next to you feel absent. Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel? Every advance in communications technology is a tragedy to the closeness of human interaction. With e-mail and instant messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voice mail, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If my morn has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine.

As almost every contact we can imagine between human beings gets automated, the alienation(疏远) index goes up,  You can' t even call a person to get the phone number of another person anymore.  Directory assistance is almost always fully automated.

I am not against modern technology. I own a cell phone, an ATM card, a voice-mail system, and an e-mail account. Giving them up isn't wise.., they're a great help to us. It’s some of their possible consequences that make me feel uneasy.

More and more, I find myself hiding behind e-mail to do a job meant for conversation, or being relieved that voice mail picked up because I did' t really have time to talk. The industry devoted to helping me keep in touch is making me lone-lire.., or at least facilitating my antisocial instincts.

So I' ve put myself on technology restriction: no instant messaging with people who live near me, no cell-phoning in the presence of friends, no letting the voice mail pick up when I’m at home.

66Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?

     AThe Advance of Communications Technology

Byou can hardly get in touch with the people sitting beside you

Cmodern technology makes it hard for people to have face-to-face talk

Dpeople can now go to work without going to the office

68The writer feels that the use of modern communications is          .

    Asatisfying                                Bencouraging

    Cdisappointing                             Dembarrassing

69The passage implies that       .

    Amodern technology is bridging  people

    Bmodern technology is separating people

Part IV Writing (45 marks)

Section A (10 marks)

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

In addition to self-awareness, imagination, and conscience, it is the fourth quality — independent will — that really makes effective self-management possible. It is the ability to make decisions and choices and to act in agreement with them. It is the ability to act rather than to be acted upon, to actively carry out the program we have developed through the other three qualities.

The human will is an amazing thing. Time after time, it has overcome unbelievable difficulties. The Helen Kellers of this world give dramatic evidence to the value, the power of the independent will.

But as we examine this quality in the context of effective self-management, we realize it’s usually not the dramatic, the visible, the once-in-a-lifetime, up-by-the-bootstraps effort that brings lasting success. This special ability comes from learning how to use this great quality in the decisions we make every day.

The degree to which we have developed our independent will in our everyday lives is measured by our personal honesty. Honesty is, fundamentally, the value we place on ourselves. It’s our ability to make and keep promises to ourselves, to “walk our talk.”

Effective management is putting first things first. While leadership decides what “first things” are, it is management that puts them first, day-by-day, moment-by-moment. Management is discipline (training to be self-controlled), carrying it out.

Discipline obtains from beliefbelief in a set of values, belief in an overriding purpose, to a long-term or short term goal that must be carried out.

In other words, if you are an effective manager of yourself, your discipline comes from within; it is a function of your independent will. You are a follower of your own deep values and their source. And you have the will, the quality to control your feelings and moods rather than depend on others or have your work half done.

  Section B (10 marks)

Directions: Read the followings passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.

Magnetic north (磁极), which is the place where compass needles actually point, is near but not exactly in the same place as the geographic North Pole. Right now. The north magnetic pole is no longer a resident of Canada. It has drifted across the Canadian Arctic and is now angling toward Siberia.

Not to be confused with the geographic North Pole – the northern extremity of the Earth’s axis (地轴), the north magnetic pole(where the Earth’s magnetic field is directed downward) is moving due to natural changes in the Earth’s magnetic field, a process that originates about 3,000 kilometers below our feet, in the outer core of the planet. The core is too deep for scientists to directly detect its magnetic field. But researchers can infer the field’s movements by tracking how Earth’s magnetic feed has been changing at the surface and in space.

Scientists are now noticing that the magnetic pole has picked up its pace.

Over the past century, the pole has been migrating at an average speed of about 10 kilometers per year, says Larry Newitt, head of Geomagnetic Laboratory at Natural Resources Canada in Ottawa. Since the 1970s, this speed has increased to about 50 kilometers per year.

Scientists are wondering why the speed is increasing, says Newitt. One Hypothesis relates it to “magnetic jerks”, sudden shifts (变化) in the rate of change of the magnetic field. There have been three jerks in the past four decades, each one correlating to an increase in speed.

If the north magnetic pole continues at its current rate, it could reach Siberia by 2056.

“For most of recorded history, the pole has been a part of Canada, and now it’s not,” says Newitt. “It may be a blow to our collective psyche, but other than that, it doesn’t have a major effect on most people’s existence.

81.What does the underlined word “angling” in the first paragraph mean? (No more than 3 words)

82.How far away has the north magnetic pole migrated in the last decade? (No more than 6 words)

83.Why is the north magnetic pole moving? (No more than 8 words)
