Sometimes in the next century, the familiar early newspaper on the front porch will disappear. And instead of reading your newspaper, it will read to you. You’ll get up and turn on the computer newspaper just like switching on the TV. An electronic voice will distribute stories about the latest events, guided by a program that selects the type of news you want. You’ll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. Save it in your own personal computer if you like. These are among the predictions from communication experts working on the newspaper of the future. Pictured as part of broader home-based media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers would unite print and broadcast reporting, offering news and analysis with video images of news events.
Most of the technology is available now, but convincing more people that they don’t need paper to read a newspaper is the next step. But resistance to computer newspapers may be stronger from within journalism. Since it is such a cultural change, it may be that the present generation of journalists and publishers will have to die off before the next generation realizes that the newspaper industry is no longer a newspaper industry. Technology is making the end of traditional newspapers unavoidable.
Despite technological advances, it could take decades to replace news-print with computer screens. It might take 30 to 40 years to complete the change over because people need to buy computers and because newspapers have established financial interests in the paper industry.
61. The best title for this passage is .
A. Computer Newspapers Are Well Liked
B. Newspapers of the Future Will Likely Be on Computers
C. Paper Newspapers Are out of Fashion
D. Communications Technology in the Future
62. It might take 30 or 40 years for computer newspapers to replace traditional newspapers because .
A. it is technologically impossible now
B. computer newspapers are too expensive
C. both the general people and professional journalists are against them
D. traditional newspapers are easy to read
63. Which of the following is NOT an advantage of computer newspapers?
A. They are cheaper than newspapers.
B. They are convenient to use.
C. You can get more information from them quickly.
D. You can easily save information for future use.
64. The reason why journalists are not eager to accept computer newspapers is that .
A. they don’t know how to use computers
B. they think computer newspapers take too much time to read
C. they are afraid that they might be unfit for their jobs
D. they have been trained to work for traditional newspapers
65. We can infer from the passage that .
A. all technological changes are good
B. all technologies will eventually replace old ones
C. new technologies will replace old ones sooner or later
D. traditional newspapers will stay for another century

Today, when there are many top graduates looking for top jobs, graduates can differentiate(区别) themselves by obtaining a double major or even a double degree. Increasingly, employers are looking for individuals who are not only competent and intelligent, but who have different skill sets and who are knowledgeable in many areas. Part of the appeal to employers is that your extra work demonstrates a willingness to take on difficult tasks. Additionally, if your majors overlap (重叠), you are able to show potential employers that you have both breadth and depth of knowledge.
By studying for a double major, although you will be studying for only one degree, you will be focusing on two related and integrated subjects that complement (补充) each other. Classes overlap between the majors, meaning fewer classes are required than with a double degree, so it is easier to finish within four years.
In contrast, with the more rigorous (严格的) double degree, you will be studying for two different degrees in two completely different areas of study. Although pursuing such a course of study allows students to complete two wholly separate degrees in less time than if they were to earn them separately, many strong students still find it incredibly difficult to complete in four or five years.
If you are committed to a double major/degree, it is wise to do a little bit of planning. Some students try to find two courses of studies that are related, while others seek to round out their academic studies by choosing two completely unrelated fields.
For double majors, common pairings include: (i) economics and a foreign language; (ii) political science or government and journalism; (iii) economics and psychology.
For double degrees, common pairings include: (i) engineering and a business program such as finance or accounting; (ii) engineering and economics.
66. What do employers think of the graduates with different skill sets and knowledge in many areas?
A. They should be given top jobs.
B. They are willing to take difficult tasks.
C. They are better than those who are competent and intelligent.
D. They must have attained a double major or even a double degree.
67. According to the passage, the underlined word “breadth” most probably means_________.
A. width B. amount C. quantity D. quality
68. To obtain a double major, you _________.
A. should complete two wholly separate degrees
B. need to focus on two related and integrated subjects
C. need to spend more time than obtaining a double degree
D. have to take courses in two completely different areas of study
69. If you are devoted to a double major or degree, you should _________.
A. find two subjects with overlapping classes
B. learn about what your potential employers want
C. decide what to learn with your intentions considered
D. try to decide on some common pairings as soon as possible
70. Which statement is CORRECT according to the passage?
A. Economics is a major while engineering is a degree.
B. Every college student should take a double major or degree.
C. Earning a double degree is more difficult than obtaining a double major.
D Some students choose two completely unrelated fields to show their ability in academic study.
PART FOUR WRITING (45 marks)
SECTION A (10 marks)
Directions: Read the following passage. Complete the diagram by using the information for the passage. Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer.
There are two types of people in the world.Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy, while the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.
People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied.By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend(hurt) many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation. It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes.I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.
Though in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success.Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrong doings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them.Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.

JACKSONVILIE,
The boy, Joshua Earl Patrick Philips, admitted and was charged with murder in the death of the girl, Maddie Clifton, who disappeared on Nov. 3, Sherriff Nat Glover said.
Joshua, who has no criminal record, would not be eligible (合格的) for the death punishment because of his age. Detectives discovered a knife and a baseball bat believed to be the weapons (武器) used to kill the girl, Sherriff said.
The girl had been stabbed at least nine times and was struck in the head. Sheriff Glover said at the conference. The authorities did not say whether she had been attacked sexually, nor did they give motive for the attack.
The boy’s mother , Melissa Phillips , grew suspicious for the police searched her home on Monday and detected an odor (气味) , Sherriff said. This morning she pulled aside the frame of the bed , saw a child’s feet and called an officer, she said.
Maddie’s body was found under a sheet of wood supporting the frame of the water bed , which was filled, Sheriff Glover said , adding , “ He put her under the bed and tapped her up in it..”
Investigators believe the third-grader was killed in the boy’s house shortly after she disappeared last Tuesday, touching off a wide-spread search.
On Friday, Maddie’s parents , Steve and Shelia Clifton, made an earnest request for her return.
The boy’s house, like others in the neighborhood, had been searched three times. During the third search on Monday, the mother has at first said she thought the odor came from family pets.
Hundreds of volunteers had sent thousands of leaflets with Naddie’s picture since she disappeared that evening, about 30 minutes after she went out to play with friends.
