1. In our society, some people behave in a way that is incongruous with a harmonious and civilized community. Consider running a red traffic light. Is it an example of such behavior? What about spitting and littering in public? Why or why not?

Directions:
Passage 1 is about a study on alcohol-related death in an eastern European country.
Passage 1:
According to a recent study conducted by three scientists, over half of all unnatural deaths are related to alcohol. The study suggests that 52% of deaths caused by traffic accidents or other events are linked to alcohol drinking. //
The scientists examined deaths in certain eastern European country over a six-year period. They divided deaths into natural----those that were caused by disease----and unnatural----those that were accident or event-related. //
The study shows that alcohol is a problem not only when it comes to drunk driving and traffic deaths, but also in a significant number of all unnatural deaths. This means that you run a greater risk when you’re under the influence of alcohol. //
While some progress has been made in reducing overall alcohol consumption in some western parts of the European world, situation in the eastern Europe is worsening. //

I’m a research psychologist and I’ve been doing researches on the problems of marriage and family. Today I feel greatly honored to be invited to give a talk on this subject.//
Being a good parent is harder now than it has ever been before. Under the pressure of modern life, a good partner and a good worker does not necessarily make a good parent.//
I think most of us have a bit of a yearning for a table full of children, with the older ones helping the younger ones. But the “traditional family” has no longer existed.//
The problem is that we’ve assumed that women should be able to do everything like men. And it’s just not possible. In fact, few women with higher education are now opting to take career breaks so as to be at home with their children. //
