Protests precede Putin’s inauguration
Violent clashes broke out in Moscow yesterday as thousands of demonstrators poured on to the streets on the eve of Vladimir Putin’s inauguration as president.
莫斯科昨日爆发暴力冲突，成千上万示威者在弗拉基米尔•普京(Vladimir Putin)就任总统前夕涌上街头。
Hundreds of riot police cordoned off part of Bolotnaya Square, where the protesters were due to hold a sanctioned rally, sowing confusion and triggering violence as demonstrators tried to break through.
数百名防暴警察封锁了沼泽广场(Bolotnaya Square)的一部分，而那里是抗议者们要举行获得批准的集会的场所。警方的行动埋下混乱种子，并在示威者试图突破警戒线之际触发暴力行为。
Shouting “fascists” and “Russia without Putin”, marchers hurled stones, bottles and Molotov cocktails at riot police who fought back with batons in the first violence since a Moscow protest movement began in December. Early reports said there were about 200 arrests.

Opposition leader Alexei Navalny was arrested as he tried to break through a police cordon, while fellow leaders Sergei Udaltsov and Boris Nemtsov were taken away by police seconds after they began speaking.

Mr Udaltsov estimated 100,000 had taken part in the opposition rally. Other protest organisers put the figures anywhere between 20,000 and 50,000.
