Axel the Truck: Rocky Road |
Axel is a little truck with great big wheels. Axel loves to explore, have fun, go fast, and get dirty. The Axel books are ideal for children just learning to read, and feature fun art and an easy-to-read text that builds vocabulary, phonics skills, and the joy of reading.
Rocky Road is the second book about Axel, the little truck with great big wheels. Axel heads to the mountains and races, bumps, and speeds up and down rocky roads. He even races a mountain goat or two! When he gets muddy, Axel heads to the car wash before heading home. The Axel books offer a fast-paced and fun first reading experience for emergent readers and build comprehension and phonics skills.

This book is filled with the same word sound effects versus actual sentences. i.e. Vroom! This book's content is better for a baby than an emergent reader. This Axel the trucks's content is below sub par compared to the Pete the Cat series I Can Read, My First level.
My son first loved this story on iBooks then I decided to transition back to normal books. He loves it
Great book for kids...
So, the grandkids love Pete the Cat books. Since the Petes are part of the "My First I Can Read" series I decided to try more and different books from that series.
Axel the Truck is one of the lesser known entries on the "My First I Can Read" shelf, and I took a flyer on the first two books sight unseen. The first book, ("Beach Race"), is the story of a little monster truck who goes "Vroom", goes fast and gets muddy a lot. It's cheerful and brightly colored. Each page has about two sentences of five words each. Things like, "Axel races the big trucks." The second book is virtually identical to the first, except this time Axel bounces around on a rocky trail road, which is actually pretty cool. Both books went over well.
Note that these are 32 pages, but the actual story/picture part is 26 pages. The book has a two page garage spread and a one page glossary of tools at the end, which is identical to what's in book one. Also note that eight of the pages here are identical to the pages in book one, and that book two is thus a lot like book one, just with a new middle, which might be a little disappointing or confusing. I'm not sure I'd need a second Axel book unless he became a real favorite, and I'm only interested in these as good-value paperbacks.
So, a nice enough find and worth a try, but not a must have for us.
My 3 year old son was very excited to receive this to help him with his reading, He showed more interest in this beginning reading book since it involved a truck and he is wild about anything transportation related.
