The Random House Book of Poetry for Children

The most accessible and joyous introduction to the world of poetry!

The Random House Book of Poetry for Children offers both funny and illuminating poems for kids personally selected by the nation's first Children's Poet Laureate, Jack Prelutsky. Featuring a wealth of beloved classic poems from the past and modern glittering gems, every child who opens this treasury will finda world of surprises and delights which will instill a lifelong love of poetry. Featuring 572 unforgettable poems, and over 400 one-of-a-kind illustrations from the Caldecott-winning illustrator of the Frog and Toad series, Arnold Lobel, this collection is, quite simply, the perfect way to introduce children to the world of poetry.

The Random House Book of Poetry for Children was recognized upon its publication in 1983 as an invaluable collection--a modern classic--and it has not since been surpassed. Five hundred poems, selected by poet and anthologist Jack Prelutsky, are divided into broad subject areas such as nature, seasons, living things, children, and home. The poems of Emily Dickinson, Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, Nikki Giovanni, and Gwendolyn Brooks populate the book's pages, while Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear, Ogden Nash, and Shel Silverstein ensure that the collection delights even the most reluctant readers of rhyme. Playground chants, anonymous rhymes, scary poems, silly verse, and even some sad strains are carefully indexed by title, author, first line, and subject. With illustrations of cheerful, round-faced children and animals on every page, Arnold Lobel (a Caldecott medalist and creator of the Frog and Toad series) unifies the diverse poems to form a satisfying whole; Lobel can draw anything and make it funny--or poignant, if he chooses. This collection, one of the most varied and complete around, will carry any budding poetry lover through childhood and beyond. (Ages 5 to 11.)

作者简介

Jack Prelutsky was born in Brooklyn, New York. He attended New York City Public Schools and studied voice at the High School of Music and Art. He enrolled in Hunter College in Manhattan but left soon after "to become a beatnik". Jack has been a cab driver, a busboy, a photographer, a furniture mover, a potter, and a folk singer. He enjoys bicycling, playing racquetball, woodworking and cooking. He lives in Washington State with his wife Carolynn and a vast collection of poetry books and frogs in every shape, size, and form -- except living! There was a time when Jack couldn't stand poetry. In grade school he had a teacher who left him with the impression that poetry was the literary equivalent of liver. He rediscovered poetry in his twenties, and he decided that he would write about things that kids really cared about, and that he would strive to make poetry delightful. He has been writing poetry for more than twenty years and has published more than three dozen books for children.

内容很棒,每晚睡前都跟他一起念,喜欢

Not my favorite collection of Children's poems. The only word I can think for it is "ugly". Many of the poems are rude and or depict adults being mean to children or children being rude to each other. Some are quite violent and or disturbing..I guess they're supposed to be silly? It's just not my favorite. That said, there are a few funny poems, but many many that I found disturbing or ugly and have skipped. This is a "meh" selection. I highly recommend Julie Andrews Poetry Anthology, amazing!!!

My son does not love his reading homework, the way he used to. This; poetry rather, has re-spiked his interest! He is 8 & very bright, Math homework, no problem, he could do that all day long...but as we all know, reading is as important. I tell him, "we learn to read because later you must read to learn". This book is a wonderful segway to a fantastic group of poets. Each page gives him a new topic; something new to consider.

I have two boys, they both enjoyed my reading this poetry to them. I give credit to the writers, and editors for selecting these poems. They are fun, easy to animate while reading, and they held the attention of my little boys just as well or better than their bedtime stories. The vocabulary is not simple, and I liked that a lot. My sons grew up to have exceptional vocabularies and I give some credit to the nights we spent with this book. We enjoyed them from years 1 through 5. Some discretion might be needed for the scarier verses. I had to spend some time lightening them up after one inspired rendition of the Boogie man.

Terrific selections, including many that were new to me. It really pays off to have a poet (and one with such a great feeling for children) select the material, from a publisher with the resources of Random House. I usually buy a poetry collection as a first- or second - Christmas present for my many grandnieces and -nephews. I failed to take the advice in my headline, probably because I did not read the PW recommendation all the way through, I'll probably select another book for this year's intended recipient, and save this one to give to about a first grader.

My daughter (age 8) and I have found lots of poems we enjoy as we leaf though this book. It's a very nice collection. The pictures are only so-so. I've seen other books with much nicer art work, but if you're in it more for the words than the pictures, you'll enjoy the poems. I also like the way it's organized in chapters with themes (e.g., seasons, people, animals).

If you homeschool, you'll find a small unit study on poetry which is linked to this book at a site called homeschoolshare.
