The cover is a bit misleading, thats why I gave it a four. This book is a question and answer type of book. Its like a math work book. If your looking to build projects this is not the book. I know the cover gives that impression, but that is not covered. The book is about the science/math behind electricity/electronics. I first learned electronics by getting a book where you actually build small projects, I eventually go the hang of building little projects and wanted to learn the science behind what I was doing in a q and A format and this book fit the bill since I was not lloking for a text book. Its not a text type book, so if you like things explained in detail, this is not the book. Over all not a bad book, but it may not be the best book for every one.
This one-star review is only with regards to the Kindle edition of the book, which is fraught with error. I am very disappointed by it and will be contacting Amazon to rectify the matter.
I found the format of the book great for learning. I am a mechanical engineer who wants to get a better grasp of electronics. Admittedly, I'm only through chapter 16 at the time of this review, however, I've learned a lot already. He presents the material in a very straight-forward way and doesn't attempt to cover too much material before he provides a quiz. I'm looking forward to completing the book. I may consider, after that, buying the book designed for experiments. But if the rest of the book is as good as it has been so far, I will be very pleased. Perhaps, I'm "dumber" than the last reviewer, but I found the presentation level to be perfect for me. I highly recommend the book!
I have a two year degree in electronics so this is a great review. There is a 20 question quiz at the end of every chapter, four section tests, and a final exam. I'm about 1/6 of the way through currently. I bought this to supplement my studying for my ETA cert. However, for a beginner, this may speed through things a bit too fast. At the price, though, it's hard to pass up even for a beginner. I believe I paid less than $20 for almost 700 pages of content. It's easy to read, also. If you are a beginner, you may want to try to find some reviews from beginners as well to see how they liked it.
I bought this book after reading Understanding Basic Electronics by the ARRL. I wanted a book to help reenforce what i had learned in the ARRL's book. Teach Yourself... moves over topics a great deal differently than Understanding. I don't know if it would be as beneficial without learning especially the math that ARRL's book focuses on.
Teach yourself has much more information on electricity and electronics than would be needed for a ham radio test but would still be beneficial to learn. I don't know how advanced it is compared to what there is to learn on the subject is but there is a great deal that i have not learned from studying for all three ham radio licenses. I does seem to focus less on math and more on other information.
There are tests at the end of the chapters, sections and book to review what you have read. The end of chapter tests are more comprehensive and the answers are in the book and detailed answers can be found on the web at the books companion site. This book is over 650 pages with a final test at the end. It is very informative and laid out in sections that would be easy to refer to when needed. I gave 5 stars because of the amount of information that this book provides although, depending on the person may not be the best 'first' book on electronics if you want to reenforce the electronics formulas with practice questions.
