I greatly enjoyed this book because I discovered that I had played a role in this historical saga. From1963 to 1968 I examined the lungs microscopically of over 7000 lab mice that had been exposed over many months to LA urban air pollution. Their was considerable hype associated with this long term study but strangely no results were ever covered in the lay press. The authors allude to this absence on page 202. The explanation probably lies in my results which found that the exposed mice had significantly fewer lung tumors than the control mice breathing filtered air. I published this result in a scientific journal but it attracted no attention probably because it was politically out of favor at the start of the environmental movement. I have written about this study more fully on Chip Jacobs Smogtown Blog. Murray Gardner, Center of Comparative Medicine, UC Davis
I have been keenly interested in smog since I first experienced it in Downey, California, in 1953. I thought that was when it started. I had no idea what caused it or how long it had been around. Through the years, I've read snippets here and there but every one had a different slant and was as deep as the water overspray on my driveway from my sprinkling system. The research that Jacobs and Kelly put into their effort is incredible. I now feel like an expert!
I am a free lance writer; emphasis on free! When I was young, I thought I was a good basketball player until I played against Carl Braun (New York Knicks in the 50s) in the army. That was the day I realized I wasn't very good. I felt the same way this morning when I turned the last page of this book.
The book is, at once, alarming and encouraging. Every American needs to read this book and take a look inside and around. We are at a crossroads. The decisions we make today could save or doom our progeny.
Having grown up in LA county and witnessing the advent of smog and it's impact on our community and our lives, it was a good read. It illustrates how slow government is to act when there is a problem, and how politics always come first. We face a similar problem today and we are seeing the same thing there, the worldwide oil shortage. If we only needed petroleum for our vehicles it would be a different story, but we need it to manufacture just about everything we consume, and they are dragging their feet once again in finding a replacement for the combustion engine.
Great subject! Fascinating piece of California history. Who would have ever thought L.A. smog would command such historical attention? But where was the editor??? This thing is full of grammatical errors -- brings a book down every time. I give it five stars for its content only -- and for my love of L.A.
I liked this book immensely. Not too technical--nor too "popular." Most of my time in the LA basin has been in the winter--so I never completely understood what all the fuss was about. Now I do.
