A jumble of facts (some mistakes) put together to form a book. Not enough time for a good biography of any of the three men chosen. Not really a history of aviation due to lack of timeline and failure to include so many other contemporary contributors. Had way too much personal information on Lindbergh in comparison with the other two men. Made poor use of a great deal of good research. Would recommend spending your time on true biographies/autobiographies in order to get a better sense of the things that these pioneers accomplished. Chuck Yeager, Jackie Cochran, Beryl Markham, the Wright Brothers, and so many other amazing people have written some of the most interesting books I have ever read. Berg' s book on Lindbergh is superb along with Doolittle' s own book on his life.
This is an engaging, well-written history of three important figures instrumental in the early history of and the development of aviation on a world scale. As an aviation writer myself, I know much of the history Groom covers, but there are certainly revelations in the book that were new to me, especially about Rickenbacker. Similarly, Lindbergh's combat experience in the Pacific was more extensive than I had realized.
It could have used a good review by an aviation-savvy editor, however. There are numerous technical descriptions that, while not flat out wrong, aren't very accurate, either. Nonetheless, the book is a quick, informative read that I would recommend for any reader interested in the history of aviation.
Mr Groom is decent writer and good storyteller, but this book contains some really glaring factual errors that are irritating to anyone who knows something about early aviation history and confusing to some one who doesn't.
For example, Mr Groom confuses a triplane (which he calls a tri-wing, a term I've never seen before) with a tri-motor and a two paragraph passage explaining the origin of sychronized machine guns and the term 'ace' in the First World War is a totally innaccurate mess.
These are not fatal flaws but they should be addressed before a paper edition is published.
