Instrument Flying Handbook Faa-h-8083-15b |
This Instrument Flying Handbook is designed for use by instrument flight instructors and pilots preparing for instrument rating tests. Instructors may find this handbook a valuable training aid as it includes basic reference material for knowledge testing and instrument flight training. Other Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) publications should be consulted for more detailed information on related topics. This handbook conforms to pilot training and certification concepts established by the FAA. There are different ways of teaching, as well as performing, flight procedures and maneuvers and many variations in the explanations of aerodynamic theories and principles. This handbook adopts selected methods and concepts for instrument flying. The discussion and explanations reflect the most commonly used practices and principles. Occasionally the word "must" or similar language is used where the desired action is deemed critical. The use of such language is not intended to add to, interpret, or relieve a duty imposed by Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR). All of the aeronautical knowledge and skills required to operate in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) are detailed. Chapters are dedicated to human and aerodynamic factors affecting instrument flight, the flight instruments, attitude instrument flying for airplanes, basic flight maneuvers used in IMC, attitude instrument flying for helicopters, navigation systems, the National Airspace System (NAS), the air traffic control (ATC) system, instrument flight rules (IFR) flight procedures, and IFR emergencies. Clearance shorthand and an integrated instrument lesson guide are also included.

Unfortunately, I was in a hurry when I bought this edition, and now I regret it.
This is NOT the color version; instead, you should buy the ASA product, with the wings at the top.
I was sorely disappointed to discover that this version is all black-and-white -- except for the cover.
Nowhere inside the book does it show the >true< printer's identity or the >actual< date of the edition, although it prominently displays "2012" alone on the first page.
Re: content, that might rate 3.5 stars.
The book is very thorough and has all the essential facts and information, but it reads like a government text book, and sometimes there is TMI, too much (irrelevant) information.
And, of course, it belabors the FAA's beloved but complicated "primary and supporting instruments" approach, necessary for when -- not if -- the attitude indicator or vacuum pump fails you.
The worst aspect of this emphasis is that there is no table of maneuver vs. primary and supporting instruments. You have to find that on the web: search for "primary and supporting instruments chart".
Coupled with the other essential FAA instrument rating pub, "Instrument Procedures Handbook," the "Instrument Flying Handbook" is an excellent introduction to getting an instrument ticket. The Instrument Procedures Handbook really gets into the thick of the procedures and regs, so you'll need both books. I've just begun my study and found both books very helpful. And, since Amazon makes a package deal for both titles, I couldn't resist.
Unfortunately, there's a great deal of information in the Instrument Flying Handbook (probably 50%) that is a repeat of the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge or the Airplane Flying Handbook. Not a bad thing, but I found myself skipping most of the first half of the book thinking, "I already know most of this stuff so I'll come back to it later." The last third of the book gets into the rudiments of precision flying.
This latest version of the Instrument Flying Handbook is in full color, and even emphasizes glass panel layouts.
If you want to see both books and make your own judgments, they're available as free PDFs on the FAA web site.
I bought this book as well as the Intrument Procedures Handbook with a similar cover by the same publisher. (While the description says FAA it is actually printed by Skyhorse Publishing and labeled as such on the spine and inside the cover). The content is identical to the FAA published book, but most of the pictures and figures are of low quality and low resolution and are practically unreadable. While the text is clear, it looks like all the picture were blown up from low resolution originals. Stick with the FAA versions.
This book is a black and white only version. I didn't realize that there was an option for either black and white or color until I saw a fellow class mate's color version. This was not advertised as black and white. There's a big difference in the readability of the graphic images and important details in the book. If you can find a color version of this book I recommend that you purchase that instead of this one.
Stay away, the FAA version is a beautiful full color book with tons of useful charts, graphs, and diagrams. This book costs the same as the "real" version, but has only washed out, low contrast black and white images. Returned this handbook as soon as possible!
