The Smurfs #7: The Astrosmurf |
When one of the Smurfs wants to travel to outer space, he tries to build a rocketship, but it fails to get off the ground and he grows depressed. Papa Smurf and the other Smurfs make a plan in order to cheer him up: putting him to sleep and waking him up in an elaborately staged "planet" filled by other Smurfs pretending to be aliens!

I am well aware that love of this product is carried on the powerful wings of nostalgia. When I was young I went on a trip with my family, fell ill and ended up bed-ridden the whole time. My mom bought me various Smurfs graphic novels, which I spent the whole time rereading. The Astro Smurf was my favorite.
And it still is, some twenty odd years later. It's a heart warming story with some wry humor.
My only complaint with the actual book is that these new editions are much smaller than the old ones, so the art isn't as large. The paper isn't as thick either. But the color is vibrant and the price is right.
Also, the book has a second story which is pretty good. With a cool full page painting by Peyo and a page of one three one strip gag cartoons. 54 pages all told, not including an advertisement, intro page and editor's letter.
Loved the story as a kid, love it as an adult, and good chance at least your kids will love it and some chance you will too. If you give any of these new Smurfs graphic novels a shot, let this be your test run. It won't disappoint.
As a french citizen of France living in France while having my daugther being raised with her mother in the state of Georgia, USA; I Felt it was so important for Emaline to be around this strong french kid culture. So I went ahead and ordered: A HIT!!!! She has now nearly all english title! Can't wait for her to read them in French!
A question: Amazon don't classify them as BD for "Bande Déssinée". What the english word for it, if even there is one?
Merci Amazon Prime!
It's one of my favorite Smurf comic book stories, and also one of my favorite cartoon show episodes. Never mind that Smurfette wasn't in the original, and neither was Gargamel, or that the Swoofs were orange instead of green -- it was still a fun read. The reprint version by Papercutz tries to modernize things and make it connect to the cartoon show version by having the Swoofs be green instead of orange, but I wish they would have stuck to the earlier Random House text of the original English-adapted version.
The "Smurfs and the Submarine" was a completely different art style, but the "Astrosmurf" was very good. If I could I would have given it a 4.5
