  TOEFL Independent Writing

  Topic:

Decisions can be made quickly, or they can be made after careful thought.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The decisions that people make quickly are always wrong.

Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinions.

  Essay:

Are quick decisions unsafe decisions, or not necessarily so? Typically, quick decisions are made by people when the time is tight and so they follow their instincts, whereas late decisions are made by people when they need time to deliberate. Decision making is not a black-and-white issue since what matters is when to use feelings or thoughts, under different circumstances.

On the one hand, when urgency creates decision making, intuitive feelings beat careful thoughts. People must make quick decisions (whether right ones or wrong ones) based on their instincts because sometimes there is no next time, no time-outs, no second chances; it is now or never. It is true that some of the important decisions have a time line, and if people delay a decision, the opportunity is gone forever, never to return. It seems as if to say that often any decision, even the wrong decision, is preferable to no decision at all. Of course, those people who take quick actions probably understand that there are uncertainties, but the risks are far less than the long-range risks of comfortable inaction. Accordingly, some people who follow their feelings in making quick decisions believe that they are usually right. They would not agree that the hasty decisions are always wrong.

On the other hand, there are circumstances under which people prefer to be patient for a while before making their important decisions, even if they might as well want to listen to their hearts. It is because sometimes situations are not clear at once, and that is where some people need to be patient to see how these situations develop, and that is also where thinking carefully beats acting emotionally. True enough, there are decisions in life that require more time than others, and being patient is the right attitude. People in this category would think that the decisions that people make in a hurry without deliberations are usually wrong. They would as well think that decisions should only be taken only after careful thoughts and that impatience is a dangerous thing when dealing with decision making. It is like a Chinese saying that goes: “one moment of patience may ward off disaster; one moment of impatience may ruin a whole life.”

In decision making, either feelings or thoughts or both may come into scene. It is up to people to make decisions quickly or after careful thought. Quick decisions could be right or wrong, so are decisions that are late in coming.
