Good news and bad news are mixed when air travel and the environment are on a collision course. On the one hand, more people are able to fly places beyond borders in a more convenient and easier way; while, on the other hand, the environmental impact of aircraft emissions is becoming too serious to be overlooked. How can we reduce air pollution and retain the lifestyle we enjoy?
On the positive side, air fares are falling and tourism is booming in a climate of globalization. Today, more than before, millions and millions of people can benefit from the obvious convenience and comfort that air travel has to offer. This explains in part why the number of airline flights has been rising dramatically in recent years, and is expected to skyrocket over the coming decades. With such advantages, it is not likely that air travel, and along with it tourism, will become less popular. At this stage of high-tech aviation, the way people travel long distances has changed to the extent that the world has transformed into a global village without boundaries. Thanks to the development in international travel, going to any foreign country, however far away, is practically a matter of hours rather than days or even months.
On the negative side, with the projected explosion in international travel, air pollution from aviation is a growing concern worldwide. It has been recognized that aircraft emissions pollute the air and threaten to become one of the largest contributors to climate change and global warming. Even though more fuel-efficient and less polluting jet engines have been invented, the rapid growth of air travel is certainly not doing the environment any favor. In view of this, some scientists suggest that air travel should be restricted, without saying strongly what to do to make the reduction happen. Accordingly, with the situation fast becoming from bad to worse, should the world wait to see an overall solution when all fuel resources on the planet are used up? Or better still, should we ironically make our global village simply a "No Flying Zone"?
In conclusion, there is no easy solution to the conflict between air travel and the environment, and the worldwide problem will continue until nobody knows when. As it seems, solutions are few in sight and opinions are deeply divided between the aviation sectors and the environmentalists. Only one thing appears to be clear: they agree to disagree.
