My son was assigned this book as summer reading rising to 6th grade. I try to either read books aloud with my kids, or read them simultaneously so we can talk together about what we've read. I should also reveal that I am a 4th grade teacher and embarrassed to say I had not yet read this, though it is in my classroom library and some of my more advanced readers have said that they love this book.
I completed this book in two summer afternoons while stuck at home sick. And I didn't want to put it down. The characters are rich and the action is a fun romp through dangerous waters. It's really important to remember for whom this book was written -- instead of the knee-jerk adult analyses (too long, disappointing ending, blah blah blah) this book speaks beautifully well to 'tweens and their hopes and fears about fitting in, being "normal", being nerdy, the possibility of being a hero, etc. Do you REMEMBER what this stage of life felt like sometimes??! The author has masterfully spoken to the 9 - 12 year old reader: You are smart, you have unique talents and gifts, you CAN change the world, AND family are the folks who love and stick with you (blood relations or not).
Is the book perfect? Nope. Is the book a great read? Yup. Is the book written for a 40+-year-old bibliophile teacher? Of course not, but I love the book and so does my son.
I hope the author knows what an impressive job he did writing to his intended audience.
This is the first book of a trilogy series. It starts following one child names Reynoe who finds an ad in the newspaper for a "special opportunity." Through this special opportunity he was able to meet 3 other children. The book then follows four children who are trying to help their new found friend Mr. Benedict. Mr. Benedict wants the children to help him stop the evil Ledopthra Curtain.
This book is a very quick and easy read. Is has an interesting plot that keeps you engaged and not wanting to put the book down. The book is a good mystery that makes you think about the way you live your life. The book is a good read for all ages. The characters are very relatable to your own life. The characters also progress and devolop into loving characters.
This book is an excellent book for readers in 5th or 6th grade. Maybe lower. But it has a great story a great beggining and ending, great characters and a great setting. It really makes you think and wonder what will happen. It also gives a lot of detail in the setting, what the characters are thinking about, and the moment of what's happening. This also gives you an old feeling (a feeling of the 1900 or something like that) of when there wasn't advanced technologie like there is now. So I give this a 5 star. I haven't read the other books in this series, but I'm sure they're just as awsome as this one.
If you're looking for a sort of history fiction book. I would defenitly recomend this one.
(This review is not by David Palmiter. It is by his 17 year old son Gannon Palmiter.) As a child during my 7th grade reading class, I fell in love with this book and its' subsequent sequels. Never before, in 7th grade, had I experienced such a creative plot surrounding astounding character development. The story centers around four orphans, all of whom are relatable for the audience. Reynie personifies the leader in all of us, Sticky shows our bravery in the face of fear, Kate is our creativeness when facing a problem, and Constance represents the undying stubbornness that many people have. Also, Mr. Benedict, for who the book was partly named after, serves as an ultimate father-figure for the orphans and the readers alike. Any child will grow to love and cherish the book as I did. But, the book can easily be enjoyed by adults too. Stylistically, The Mysterious Benedict Society rivals the most sophisticated of novels and is a brilliant piece of storytelling. It has been many years since I first read this book, yet it is still one of my favorites and something I read again annually. Bottom line, the Mysterious Benedict Society is an intelligent, creative take on an adventure story that will mesmerize readers of all ages.
