Nemesis: A Harry Hole Novel |
“Nesbø’s storytelling abilities are incomparable. Nemesis is crime novel as art form and great entertainment.”
—USA Today
The #1 international bestseller from one of the most celebrated crime writers in Europe--the New York Times bestselling author of The Snowman--Jo Nesbø’s extraordinary thriller Nemesis features Norwegian homicide detective Harry Hole, “the next in the long line of great noir crime detectives,” (San Diego union -Tribune) in a case as dark and chilling as an Oslo winter’s night. The second Harry Hole novel to be released in America—following the critically acclaimed publication of The Redbird—Nemesis is a superb and surprising nail-biter that places Jo Nesbø in the company of Lawrence Block, Ian Rankin, Michael Connelly, and other top masters of crime fiction. Nesbø has already received the Glass Key Award and the Booksellers’ Prize, Norway’s most prestigious literary awards. Nemesis is proof that there are certainly more honors in this extraordinary writer's future.
“Nesbo returns with another novel that is every bit the multitextured, complexly plotted, psychologically rich thriller that made Redbreast such an unqualified success. . . . No doubt about it: Nesbo belongs on every crime-fiction fan’s A-list.” (Booklist (starred review))
“Assured, complex, and evocative.” (Seattle Times)
“The high-intensity action is threaded through a series of Chinese boxes revealing one false solution after another before the brilliantly inventive final twist.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))
“[A] beautifully executed heist drama. . . . Expertly weaving plot lines from Hole’s last outing to feature the inspector, The Redbreast (2007), Nesbo delivers a lush crime saga that will leave U.S. readers clamoring for the next installment.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))
“The dense plot is supremely detailed. . . . A crisp, clean translation. . . . Satisfying.” (New York Times Book Review)
“Nesb? has a knack for Euro noir.” (Entertainment Weekly)
“Nesbo offers up another top-notch mystery thriller, thickly layered, perfectly plotted, and briskly paced to keep readers hooked. With ties to events in The Redbreast, this is an excellent sequel. . . . Recommended for all fiction collections and essential for Scandinavian crime lovers.” (Library Journal)
“High tension, lightning pace, a flawed but ultimately sympathetic protagonist: NEMESIS has it all.” (BookPage)
“It’s a good bet that if this is the first Harry Hole novel you read, you’ll never miss another. . . . It’s complex but so well written. . . . If you’re a fan of crime fiction, Harry Hole’s your man.” (Arizona Republic)
“No matter what language you read, get on the Jo Nesbo crime patrol and see why the world loves Harry Hole.” (Madison County Herald)
A musician, songwriter, and economist, Jo Nesbø is also one of Europe’s most acclaimed crime writers, and is the winner of the Glass Key Award, northern Europe’s most prestigious crime-fiction prize, for his first novel featuring Police Detective Harry Hole. Nesbø lives in Oslo.

Jo Nesbo is considered Norway's leading crime/suspense thriller author. I read "The Son" about a year ago, and really liked it. Based on "The Son" I decided to read "Nemesis", and found it less satisfying. Don't get me wrong - Nesbo can write, and his Harry Hole character is very good. He's not your average detective. He's an alcoholic, lacks a lot of social graces, doesn't handle relationships well, and is generally not liked by his superiors and couldn't care less. He's good at what he does, and doesn't suffer fools. His character is what got me through this novel. The story just wasn't much to my liking. For one, it was much too complex. It was difficult keeping track of the characters, it bounced around a lot, and in some places I had to jump back to read previous pages to get a sense of the jumpy flow so I could move forward in the book. It's not a bad book, but not one of Nesbo's best. But I will definitely read more of his books.
The continuing saga of the alcoholic and self-loathing detective Harry Hole in this complex serpentine tale of two murders intertwining even himself with gypsies, interesting Norwegian colleagues in the police force and jilted jealous Norwegian spouses. So twisted and bizarre in this tale of revenge for love turning into jealousy. hatred ultimately murder that it was impossible to out guess the genius of Jo Nesb?. Set in the heart of Oslo, it was a nice cosy feeling of familiarity for me since I live in Bislett, the neighborhood of Harry Hole. He works at the Gr?nland police station, an important destination for all Oslo Norwegians who want a passport.
Excellent character development for all the key characters with detailed history and humor that drew me in deeper and deeper in the fascinating and unique world of Norwegians. This time also the world of gypsies. My eyes are opened to the sorry plight of the gypsies, a persecuted race in Europe & elsewhere throughout history. A plight worse than Jews because their persecution and despise by others continues today. Hard to walk by a gypsy beggars on the streets without a more generous and sympathetic heart now.
I consider myself a big fan of crime/detective fiction, enjoying character development over procedure. I stayed with this book because of all the hoopla over Harry Hole. It was not worth it. Not at all. This is an ungodly long book and I was tempted to scrap it but kept on so I could put a Jo Nesbo and Harry Hole under my belt.
(Several reviews said this was a bad book with which to start the H.H. series, so maybe, maybe, some day.)
But right now I am ever so happy to be done with this over-contrived and often pretentious typing exercise. I'm not impressed with the characters jumping from continent to continent. Nesbo needs a courageous editor. This could have been one third its current size. (A problem with Kindle is that one can't easily discern what one is getting into lengthwise).
If you like alcoholic, eccentric yet intelligent detectives try Ken Bruen (Jack Taylor, Irish/Galway) or James Lee Burke (Dave Robicheaux, New Orleans) or Lawrence Block (Matt Scudder) New York. All three of these writers have a firmer grasp of what they are about, without the need to impress readers with their travel experience. And all three definitely develop a sense of place. Oslo at Nesbo's hand could have been any place in the last analysis.
In short Harry Hole, at least in this book, is a two-dimensional character whose main purpose is to creep the ceaseless and never-ending plot forward.
I am not impressed and would give this one star, but Nesbo does have flourishes of good writing. Perhaps he should write less and play his guitar more.
