Dare to Serve: How to Drive Superior Results by Serving Others |
With high-level experience at companies such as KFC and Domino's Pizza, coupled with stellar stock prices and profit margins at Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Bachelder has the credentials for writing about leadership. Characterized in a Restaurant News article as a modest buttoned up data wonk who turned out to be a transformative leader, the author speaks at length in the first half of the book about the four pillars guiding Popeyes's turnaround and long-term strategy. Much of her subsequent advice about empowering employees, building consensus, setting ambitious goals, and tying daily work to a higher purpose echoes that of other recent management books. What sets hers apart is an emphasis on servant leadership, meaning focusing on others instead of self and achieving solid results by being humble, accountable, and modeling personal values at work. Specific tools for assessing accountability, articulating one's personal purpose, and identifying individual talents in self and subordinates are listed.VERDICTWhile the chatty storytelling style can be off-putting, quotes from thinkers as various as Nelson Mandela and Helen Keller are interspersed throughout with some 40 reflections meant to move the reader from understanding this management philosophy to implementing it. Great story and great lessons. She draws very solid lessons from down and dirt, real life experience. It is very inspirational and I enjoyed it a great deal. And I expect that I will reread it.
However, the author states that she wants the book to be very practical. I didn't find it to be. She links to resources that she found helpful. That's fantastic, but she doesn't go into the deeper "how to" stuff herself. She almost teases the reader with practicality.
Normally I don't find authors who had one major success story useful. She is pretty focused on what worked or her in this one situation. However, she does a decent job extending beyond the Popeyes story. It did not have that "do what I did" feel. I think she understands the limits of her specific experience and tried to emphasize the broader lessons illustrated by her story
All that said I would recommend it highly.
There are countless books on leadership but too few have been authored by people who have lived through the pains, pressures and pleasures of influencing a challenging organization through a difficult transformation to yield a sustained success. Cheryl Bachelder pens a powerful manifesto on true servant leadership--one that comes from the heart, forged by discipline, and displayed with grace, depth and humility. Her story is timely, her lessons wise, and her personal example inspirational. Dare to Serve should be the playbook for every leader regardless of the size or mission of the enterprise.
I have read more leadership books than I care to admit. Dare to Serve is one of the most distinctive and refreshing leadership books out there! Not only does Dare to Serve offer up a contrarian approach to leadership but Cheryl Bachelder backs it up with real examples and a true to life transformation story of how she literally turned around Popeyes by leading against the grain. In the end what makes her message most compelling is her humility and ability to not take herself too seriously...and that she readily admits her everyday struggle to be a servant leader...because its difficult. Anyone in or outside business, young or more seasoned in any profession can benefit greatly from her words of wisdom and practical experience.
Very good material and case studies. The formatting is not very good for note taking or for use as a reference. Also, the author seems to take a great deal of credit for people turning back to eating out after the recession. I can see they have done a good job at Popeye's, but normalized against many other fast food chains and industries, stock prices are up little.
The subject matter is really good, and this concept needed addressing.
