Baum's story of Dorothy, carried by a cyclone from a Kansas farm to the land of the Tin Woodman, Scarecrow, and Cowardly Lion, was published in May 1900. By the following January, 100,000 copies had been sold, and the book has ever since been an undisputed favorite. The original illustrations by Denslow, which are reflected in the film and stage versions, have often been imitated but never surpassed.

I have a pair of developmentally delayed twins. They are age 7 3/4 and I tried reading the full, unabridged version of the Wizard of Oz to them; it was too wordy and too long. Then, we read this abridged version and they loved it! the brevity of the chapters keeps the plot going for their short attention span. The bonus is that we got to watch the movie after we finished the book as a reinforcer for what they read and now they really love the Wizard of Oz! One chose to do his last book report in 2nd grade on this book. Both ask to watch the movie every weekend; we have watched it now 4 times. I have to finish another Stepping Stones Classic so we can watch that movie. We are working on the Three Musketeers.

Bought this for our granddaughter that's never read a chapter book. She thought it was for her sister. We knew that she could handle the words. We've created a little reading monster! Bedtime is now with a flashlight and her Wizard of Oz book before going to sleep! She loves it!

My third grader, who is a low to average reader is able to read and enjoy the classics due to the readability level of this series. I would highly recommend them. They are challenging chapter books that stay true to the original stories.

This book was great for my second grader. We participated in the trunk or treat this year at school and our theme was wizard of oz. It was great to have her read the book first before the event. She enjoyed reading it.

This is a chapter book. Great book for the new reader that goes with the well known movie and play youngsters love.
