My son's first grade reading comprehension material was this awesome booklet I found at the dollar store. It was colorful, each story focused on a different skill (sequencing, using context clues, indentifying main ideas, etc.), and the activities were varied and held his interest. Won't be using this Spectrum version until next year, and it's nice enough. Covers the same skills, of course, but in a drier way- plain old questions & answers. I guess it's just what happens when kids grow up. :( I do like the wide variety of both fiction and non-fiction topics like parts of a plant, the basics of baseball, a family game night in the dark during a thunderstorm, several about cats, getting new neighbors, how to make a fruit pizza... in fact, skimming through it I'm actually looking forward to using it. Also, at the beginning of each story is a statement or question to pinpoint the purpose in reading like, "Read to find out why it rains," and "What does David like best about his day with Grandfather?" I like it- we'll have to see what the boy thinks!
I bought this to prepare my daughter for the second grade over the summer. The stories are short enough to keep a child's interest, but long enough that it really helps them with their reading and vocabulary skills. The exercises are creative and good to help teach a child to retain what they have read as well as teach them vocabulary and how to translate the overall feelings of the characters and the story. I am very happy with this purchase.
I have worked at an after school program for over 10 years, and Little Critter has been a staple. Every two pages contain one story and one worksheet, including reading questions, grammar, spelling, etc.
Recently, I bought newer editions, and they have been improved hugely. Previously, although the stories were interesting and fun for the kids to read, the questions were too simple and didn't allow the kids to answer more creatively. The newer books have many open ended questions which really lets you check for grammar, understanding, and creativity.
I would recommend these books for parents who want a little extra reading comprehension. I would say that all Spectrum Reading books are not grade exact. For example, the second grade level for this workbook is more like mid level first grader, so these books would be a good review during summer break for incoming second graders.
My two older children are very different from each other. My son HATES to read and his sister who is 3 years behind him LOVES to read.
My son LOVED it. I couldn't believe I was able to get him to ready anything. He completed the entire book over one summer.
My daughter, an excellent reader who is going into first grade completed the first grade book and about 1/3 of this book over the summer.
I recommended these to my neighbor and her children loved them as well.
The story is continuous through the book. You read a section of the story and then you answer comprehension questions about that page.
I HIGHLY recommend these books.
I got it so that my boy will be forced to do some reading, and then thinking about what he read. My daughter didn't need this stuff.... she picks up everything book she can get her hands on.... not so with my boy. He needs something that will make him think about what he is reading, so this is good for us at the moment.
