Eye of the Crow: The Boy Sherlock Holmes, His 1st Case

Sherlock Holmes, just thirteen, is a misfit. His highborn mother is the daughter of an aristocratic family, his father a poor Jew. Their marriage flouts tradition and makes them social pariahs in the London of the 1860s; and their son, Sherlock, bears the burden of their rebellion. Friendless, bullied at school, he belongs nowhere and has only his wits to help him make his way.

But what wits they are! His keen powers of observation are already apparent, though he is still a boy. He loves to amuse himself by constructing histories from the smallest detail for everyone he meets. Partly for fun, he focuses his attention on a sensational murder to see if he can solve it. But his game turns deadly serious when he finds himself the accused — and in London, they hang boys of thirteen.

Shane Peacock has created a boy who bears all the seeds of the character who has mesmerized millions: the relentless eye, the sense of justice, and the complex ego. The boy Sherlock Holmes is a fascinating character who is sure to become a fast favorite with young readers everywhere.

Eye of the Crow is the first volume in a series about the boy Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock is a misfit, he has no friends until something horrible happens. A woman is murdered in the middle of the night. The police think they have a suspect, but Sherlock Holmes believes he is innocent. Sherlock decides he must solve the case and restore justice. He does not want to see an innocent man hang for a crime not committed.
Peacock's novel is definitely well researched. There is the beginning of the development of who Holmes will become. In Hitchcockian style, there is a character named Andrew C Doyle, a homage to Arthur Conan Doyle, the original author of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries. Readers with knowledge of the original stories will get even more out of this novel, but it is still a good pick for those who enjoy the Enola Holmes mysteries.

I have read all four books to date in this series (Eye of the Crow, Death in the Air, Vanishing Girl and The Secret Fiend), but am writing a review within the first installment in the hopes that others will begin this incredible journey.

Shane Peacock has written a fascinating series on Sherlock Holmes and what his life might have been as a young boy in early Victorian England. What emerges is a better understanding of Sherlock's personality and training through his formative years. The author places the reader into a richly detailed and visually affecting Victorian England - Sherlock's life intertwined among the desperate poor and the contrasted wealthy. In this setting surfaces detailed characters the reader may recognize - an elderly ally in a small apothecary shop who shares his knowledge of chemistry and potions and the fine art of bellitsu defense, a young blond daughter of an active philanthropist who desires more out of life, and a formidable and treacherous nemesis in dark clothes, top hat and cane who leads a gang of street ruffians.

Eye of the Crow is a well-plotted, thrilling first mystery involving a heinous murder in White Chapel and the crime that will catapult Sherlock into his first investigation. The book explores Sherlock's early struggles and family life, and how his first case ultimately results in a shocking personal repercussion.

Excellent way to introduce today's youth to Sherlock Holmes. There is just enough hint of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's style to make us adult fans of the detective long for more. And kids aren't totally turned off by the vocabulary of Victorian England. Loved it!

This was purchased for my 16-yr-old daughter. It keeps you on the edge of your seat; it reads quickly and well.

Just plain old awesome & stuff! (How about Eye of the Crow 2! )
(Eye of the Crow 3! )
