We homeschool. My daughter (age 8) does well spelling naturally. It's not perfect, and this book I believe will help with that, but she has has the hang of it. My son, however, (Age 10 with high-functioning autism) struggles with spelling. He was really upset that he was going to have to work on it more when he saw this work book, but once he did the first page, he said he liked it and the crosswords were fun. It was definitely a winning choice. The design of the book is nice and the layout is clear, clean, and easy to follow.

At this grade, building confidence is almost as important as building skills. The title of this book signals that this language-based "work" is going to be guided by meaningful play.

Sylvan does an excellent job of introducing and then reinforcing concepts such as the silent e (from hop to hope), short vowel sounds (big to bug), consonant blends versus digraphs and vowel pairs ("when the vowels go a walkin', the first one does the talkin'").

My son really enjoyed working the Word Scramble, Fill in the Blank, Criss Cross (crossword puzzle) and Word Search games and puzzles. We used these sheets either as a warm-up to or a cool-down from more strenuous language work that can be found in Sylvan's Second Grade Language Arts Success workbook which features more narrative-based exercises requiring higher-level reading comprehension skills.

Word comprehension is the name of this game. This fun-filled workbook spells success for your young learner.

My daughter is 1st grader and ready for 2nd grade this fall. She is a good reader but not so good in spelling. I found this book to help her practicing spelling. She enjoyed it and wanted to do more. Usually she is eager to be done with as less as possible. But with this book, she wants to keep going. I am glad I found something she can enjoy and learn. She said these pages are full of games.

I've been homeschooling for over 30 years and I bought these for my grandchildren who are now being homeschooled. Best work book I've ever seen. Very happy with all the series from Sylvan.

I like the way the book was designed. My daughter was never bored while working on it. She had task to complete 3 pages per day and now she is done with the book.
