Do Over: Make Today the First Day of Your New Career |
From the New York Times-bestselling author of Quitter and Start comes the definitive guide to getting your dream job.
When you don't like your job, Sunday isn't really a weekend day. It's just pre-Monday. But what if you could call a Do Over and actually look forward to Monday?
Starting on the first day you got paid to scoop ice cream or restock shelves, you’ve had the chance to develop the four elements all great careers have in common: relationships, skills, character, and hustle. You already have each of those, to one degree or another.
Now it’s time to amplify them and apply them in a new way, so you can call a Do Over on your career, at any age. You’ll need a Do Over because you’ll eventually face at least one of these major transitions:
• You’ll hit a Career Ceiling and get stuck, requiring sharp skills to free yourself.
• You’ll experience a Career Bump and unexpectedly lose your job, requiring strong relationships to survive.
• You’ll make a Career Jump to a new role, requiring solid character to push through uncertainty and chaos.
• You’ll get a surprise Career Opportunity, requiring dedicated hustle to take advantage of it.
Jon Acuff’s unique approach will give you the resources to reinvent your work, get unstuck, and get the job you’ve always wanted!

Half way through this book. I am reading this book slowly so I can digest it as I go... but that hasn't stopped me from telling people about the principles I am learning on a regular basis. This book has all the humor of Acuff's other books while bringing a new level of practical wisdom to apply to my life and career.
You don't have to be looking for a new job to benefit from the advice in Do Over. If I had this Career Savings Account strategy at the beginning of my career I am positive I would be much further along my career path. Buy a copy of this book for yourself and a copy for each of the college graduates in your life.
I have followed Jon Acuff for several years, reading his prior books Quitter and Start. I read an early release version of Do Over, and I like his authentic and realistic style. This book is great for the more extroverted personalities and those who realize early that their careers often mean several job changes. For people who are stuck in jobs that don't pay enough or aren't meaningful, there is a journey to more rewarding and purposeful work. However, you have to want it and hustle to get it. Build relationships rather than burn bridges. He guides you through how to rescue every day of the week because your attitude about Monday is going to influence how you feel the other six days of the week. Do Over isn't a theory; it is practical living to achieve change, not just a career change. This book release is part of Acuff's Do Over after leaving a 'dream job.' He could have let circumstances drive him into the rat race again, but instead, we have a guide book (complete with wit and humor) for planning, pursuing, and achieving a life Do Over. If you like to complain but do nothing to change your circumstance, pick a different book. If you are willing to face the fear of change and overcome risk intolerance with hustle, this book is your GPS.
I started Do Over on a Monday and finished early Friday. In reading this book, I realized that, come November, I will essentially face both a Career Bump and a Career Ceiling, attempt a Career Jump, and will have to hope for a Career Opportunity. This book could not be more relevant to me right now, but even if you're not facing any of these changes, it is still to your benefit to read this book. A Career Savings Account, as Jon calls it, is something we can (and should) all be investing in now. I often thought while reading Do Over that these ideas seemed pretty obvious, but that's because 1) Jon has developed them expertly and made them incredibly applicable; and 2) Jon is right. The formula he shares is simple and manageable, but enormously valuable.
I would have finished Do Over much sooner if I hadn't stopped to ask myself the questions Jon asks. He was right about relationships: I didn't know who I knew, but I finished that exercise with over 30 experts, friends, influencers, and former coworkers written down. He was right about skills: I categorized 28 notecards into four groups, though there's still overlap. I felt unskilled; now I have confidence in my skills. What I will do with them is still fuzzy, but Jon reassures me that fuzzy is okay.
Thank you, Jon Acuff, for being a long-distance advocate for myself and so many others, and for making these concepts--and hopefully, our Do Overs--so accessible.
For the first 18 years of life we prepare to be an adult. When we turn 65 we relax and have fun. There's a gap of 40 years where its become acceptable to be miserable in hopes of reaching the promised land of retirement.
Jon does a tremendous job of presenting the idea that your career doesn't have to be miserable, but can actually be fun and enjoyable. While you may find this book in the career section it's certainly more than that. Following the activities in Do Over will make you a better friend, father, mother, spouse, and employee. You'll learn some great techniques to use that will help uncover where your passions are and how to apply those skills into your career.
If you are just starting out on your career journey, feel stuck in a job you don't enjoy, or want to just become a better person then Do Over is the book for you.
