Half Magic

Since Half Magic first hit bookshelves in 1954, Edward Eager's Tales of Magic have become beloved classics. Now all seven cherished stories by Edward Eager about vacationing cousins who stumble into magical doings and whimsical adventures are available in updated paperback editions. The original lively illustrations by N. M. Bodecker have been retained, but eye-catching new cover art gives these classics a fresh, contemporary look for a whole new generation.

It all begins with a strange coin on a sun-warmed sidewalk.
Jane finds the coin, and because she and her siblings are having the worst, most dreadfully boring summer ever, she idly wishes something exciting would happen.
And something does: Her wish is granted.
Or not quite. Only half of her wish comes true.
It turns out the coin grants wishes--but only by half, so that you must wish for twice as much as you want.
Wishing for two times some things is a cinch, but other doubled wishes only cause twice as much trouble. What is half of twice a talking cat? Or to be half-again twice not-here? And how do you double your most heartfelt wish, the one you care about so much it has to be perfect?

Includes an introduction by Alice Hoffman

作者简介

EDWARD EAGER (1911-1964) worked primarily as a playwright and lyricist. It wasn't until 1951, while searching for books to read to his young son, Fritz, that he began writing children's stories. His classic Tales of Magic series started with the best-selling Half Magic, published in 1954. In each of his books he carefully acknowledges his indebtedness to E. Nesbit, whom he considered the best children's writer of all time--"so that any child who likes my books and doesn't know hers may be led back to the master of us all."

Alice Hoffman is the author of many books for children including Aquamarine, Green Angel, and Nightbird. Her books for adults include Practical Magic, The Museum of Extraordinary Things, The Dovekeepers and The Marriage of Opposites. Half Magic is her favorite book for children and Edward Eager is her favorite children's book author.

I loved this book as a child. It was the first long chapter-book I remember reading. Recently, I ordered it for one of my grandsons, 8 years old, and decided to re-read it. There is a timeless quality to the story, especially for a person who grew up in a family of four children, 3 girls and a boy. I was like Jane, the oldest. After reading the book, I re-read it at least twice more. I always kept my eyes on the sidewalk, just in case an ancient talisman might be shining in the sun. There is still magic in this book 50+ years after I first read it.

I read this book with my kids, my ten year old son and 8 year old daughter. It's a very fun and easy read with adventure, magic, and humor. The heroes are 4 siblings, 3 girls and a boy, which helps to connect with boys and girls. My kids absolutely loved it, they would give it 5 stars. I personally would give it 3 or 3.5, hence the rating of 4. It was certainly a fine book and fun to read, I just didn't find it quite as clever and special as other books we've read such as The Witches by Roald Dahl.

A warning to parents who are offended by violence. There is a scene in which 2 knights bascially butcher each other to death (only to be quickly reassembled by magic minutes later). It's a relatively bloodless scene given what actually happens, and I personally am not bothered by this sort of stuff in kids books nor are my kids. For example there is some gruesome and macabre action in The Witches. But it is worth noting and if you're bothered by that you may want to skip it or avoid the book. You could skip it - it comes soon after they meet Sir Launcelot - without missing the flow of the story.

Note to publisher....the kindle for iPad version we read had quite a few typos in it...far more than I've ever seen in any format. There were sections we had to reread several times to decipher.

Many years ago, more than half-way across the country (twice!), I read Half Magic when it was a Weekly Reader Children's Book Club selection. I was captivated by the concept of having wishes come true, even if you had to figure out how to word them. I have remembered specific bits of dialog from the book for all these years and was saying "YES!" to myself as I came across them when re-reading the book. I was delighted that it was available on Kindle, because my copy disappeared over the years after being read by my children, my friends' children, and those to whom it was passed on until I lost track of it. I can only hope that Half Magic is still available to today's children who are still young enough to be enchanted by flights of fancy, even in this age of technically thrilling action books, games, and videos. Some things are eternally relevant, and this book is one of them.

I remember this book as being my favorite as a child. I remember thinking how wonderful it would be to have such magical powers and great adventures. This was my first experience at finding the beauty of the school library, I eagerly would approach the shelf where it was located each week just to see what would happen next. Many years later I came across the 50th edition and had to buy it. I shared it with my grandchildren! Can you believe it, Grandchildren! Watching them read through it brought me back to those days of my childhood as I exchanged thoughts and feelings hidden for so very many years. Every child should have the opportunity to experience this beautiful story. If you missed it when you were young, borrow it for yourself and sit back and enjoy the adventure. It is a true joy!

I loved this book as a child and have enjoyed reading it to my children as an adult. It's lighthearted, quirky and fun. It's written in a style that is engaging for toddlers, while being challenging enough for my 8 year old to both grasp and read. I'm looking forward to reading more by Edward Eager. It's a great intro to the fantastical - a genre I continue to enjoy to this day.
