As someone who has been deeply moved (emotionally and intellectually) by this trilogy of books, owning such an extraordinary copy of the first book is nothing short of immensely satisfying. The box, the cover slip, and the hardback cover are all beautifully rendered. An excellent purchase I do not regret. I only hope to see 20th Anniversary Editions made in this same style for the subsequent two books in the near future.
Some books are 5 star books because of their story, how it resonates with us, how they make us feel. In the case of the Golden Compass, the story is indeed engaging, but my 5 star review is more to do with the fact that this is one of the more complicated YA books I've read, with deep topics that offer some serious thinking material to teens and adults.
This is not a book to be taken or read lightly since it is definitely NOT a light read. In a world where everyone has a daemon that you can see and we are bound to them for life... there are exceptions to this rule. Painful exceptions. A young girl named Lyra has been brought up in a university where she's had several father figures but no parents. She sees something she shouldn't see. She comes into possession of something she shouldn't have. And somehow she comes under the care of a woman who is as charming and beautiful as she is calculating. Children are being kidnapped and the reason for this will shake the foundations of the beliefs of everyone in this world.
A highly imaginative, deep, engrossing tale of the power of the soul with witches, polar bears, and deep topics discussed in a truly unique way. Reading the Golden Compass I could easily see why the movie was a mess and should be forgotten in favor of its true incarnation. This is a story meant to be read, never watched. It is meant to be digested slowly if you ask me because speed reading will DEFINITELY prompt you to miss out on details. I also toned down my usual multiple book readings because the book is so good and because you really need to give this story space in your mind. An amazing intro to a series I shall most definitely be continuing.
