Nic may have escaped enslavement in the mines outside of Rome, but his troubles are far from over. The Praetor War -- the battle to destroy Rome from within -- is in full force, and Nic is caught in the crossfire. The secretive Praetors are determined to unlock a powerful amulet -- one sure to bring the empire to its knees. I had a bunch of hours to kill recently as my family was driving to Florida for a vacation. This book was the perfect distraction from the mundane car ride and the hours flew by.

I love that the main character is male. Not a goofy male, but a really ingenious, loveably flawed male with a stubborn streak to boot. Nowadays, it seems like most leads are female. I have a 13 year old son and I have a very hard time finding him books at the library that are age appropriate and interesting enough to keep him reading. (My 15 year old daughter loves this book too.) This is book 2 in the Mark of the Thief series and you definitely have to read book one first. There is too much that you have missed otherwise. I LOVE the author's imagination and cleverness. She really can see a story entirely from start to finish. There is no faking it when you get to book 2 and you can't pull enough from one and make the story glide easily to book three. As with her False Prince series, it is amazing to see the entire story come together in a very smart and creative way.

Can not wait for book three. When I get it, I will re-read books one and two and then three, to see the full story come together. It is so much richer that way. You will not be disappointed!

Combine Harry Potter and Game of Thrones plots and writing stiles and you have a great book. It's not as slow as Lord of the Rings books but it's not as quick as Harry Potter. It's a nice change up. I really enjoyed the read.

Jennifer A. Nielsen visited my kids school and they fell in love with her. They love her books and I love they are reading. So far I am hearing this book is great from the 11 and 13 year old.

Love it, can't wait till the next book. One of my favorite authors, even though she was a school teacher.
