A Year in Brambly Hedge (Brambly Hedge) |
The mice of Brambly Hedge have been delighting adults and children alike for more than thirty years. This delightful omnibus CD contains the first four classic picture books.
The mice of Brambly Hedge have many adventures but they always have time for fun too. All through the year, they mark the seasons with feasts and festivities and, of course, the mice never miss an opportunity to meet and celebrate.
This beautifully designed omnibus CD contains four classic stories following their adventures throughout the year.
In Winter Story a heavy snowfall means the mice can hold a Snow Ball for the first time in years. In Autumn Story Primrose makes friends with the harvest mice before losing her way in the chestnut woods. Wilfred gets a birthday surprise in Spring Story, when all the mice club together to organise a fantastic picnic for him; and in Summer Story, Poppy Eyebright and Dusty Dogwood get engaged and a wonderful wedding is planned by all the mice of Brambly Hedge.
Contains: Spring Story, Summer Story, Autumn Story, Winter Story.

作者简介Jill Barklem was born in Epping and led a quiet childhood enjoying being close to nature. On leaving school, she studied illustration at St Martin’s in London. The inspiration for Brambly Hedge appeared during Jill’s daily train journey between Epping and London: shutting herself off from the outside world, she became obsessed with the way of life of a band of hedgerow mice, later to be developed as the world of Brambly Hedge. Jill still lives in Epping, Essex.

Worth buying, and yes, lovely, detailed illustrations, but in short, stories do not live up to the hype. Had I stumbled upon them in person I would have been happy to find some very cute stories richly illustrated. But based on other reviews and comparisons to the likes of Beatrix Potter my hopes were set high and I prepared to receive a literary treasure. alas, I find the stories rather uninspired- like if a parent gets a creative impulse at bedtime and comes up with a decent yarn. The kids enjoy it but it's not one that gets requested frequently. And it's definitely not Beatrix Potter, whose extremely quaint and insightful tales and exquisite language have been a favorite request by all of my children. I wish I liked it more- lots of potential- I so wanted to be lost in a charming world of quaint characters and cozy scenes. Frankly I think there is a vacuousness that comes through in the modern winter-with-no-Christmas type world, leaving one with a sense of something potential yet missing-an emptiness, if you will. But that could be just my wacky theory. Anyway some kind of lack of character depth or something. Nonetheless, I'm left with my original bias, even as a relatively young person: they just don't make 'em like they used to! Buy it for the pretty pictures and nice little stories.
One of my absolute favorites of all time. Rarely does the text rival the illustrations of a children's book, but for Brambly Hedge, I'd say that just about everything in these pages is pure magic. The mice are so very human, ironically, and their adventures, whimsies, and quirks are charmingly real and unencumbered with subtle lessons of morality, etc. The author does a great job of giving you a scene and a situation and letting the characters speak for themselves in a gentle and entertaining fashion. This treasure is not to be missed!
Without a doubt, my favorite book to read to my 4 year old daughter and we're only on the second story. Dr. Suess, you have some competition, but the Cat in the Hat and Horton will always have their places alongside Brambly Hedge. I want to hurry and read the whole book, but we'll savor a story a night - and we'll be reading this many times.
Our days are chaotic but these bring back a calm peacefulness - almost like a meditation. Each night I snuggle with her in bed, we read a chapter - after I read a page, we point out different things we see in the pictures. If I were to give any book as a gift to a new mother or to a 2/3/4 year old - this would be it.
There's a special magic...hard to explain. The pictures are exquisite, the narrative isn't one you'd want to rush through, but to savor and enjoy.
There's an innocence that will greatly appeal to a 2-4 year old and I have to admit, I've enjoyed Wilfred's birthday and Poppy's wedding as much as my daughter. She would point to the words, trying to read on the *first* page, but by the third page, she just settled back to enjoy the story and the pictures. I think that says a lot, where my daughter rests against my shoulder to listen to the story rather than trying to read - it's that sense of peacefulness that is priceless.
Yes, the book is a bit pricey - but, you can find new compilations of several stories for less than $25. We're keeping ours on the nightstand as part of the evening ritual. I was able to buy the whole series in a single book for about $20 or so. I'm glad I bought the series in a single book as the pictures are also larger.
Look forward to reading other reviews.
