Between Shades of Gray

“Few books are beautifully written, fewer still are important; this novel is both.” --The Washington Post

Lina is just like any other fifteen-year-old Lithuanian girl in 1941. She paints, she draws, she gets crushes on boys. Until one night when Soviet officers barge into her home, tearing her family from the comfortable life they've known. Separated from her father, forced onto a crowded and dirty train car, Lina, her mother, and her young brother slowly make their way north, crossing the Arctic Circle, to a work camp in the coldest reaches of Siberia. Here they are forced, under Stalin's orders, to dig for beets and fight for their lives under the cruelest of conditions.

Lina finds solace in her art, meticulously-and at great risk-documenting events by drawing, hoping these messages will make their way to her father's prison camp to let him know they are still alive. It is a long and harrowing journey, spanning years and covering 6,500 miles, but it is through incredible strength, love, and hope that Lina ultimately survives. Between Shades of Gray is a novel that will steal your breath and capture your heart.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ruta at a Teen Book Con I recently took some of my junior high students to. She is incredibly gracious and humble. I bought her new book, Salt of the Sea, but haven't had time to read it yet. However, I downloaded Between Shades of Gray and got the audio version so I could listen to it while I drove you and from work. I CAN'T WAIT TO READ MORE OF HER STUFF! I finished this book today, and my heart ached for Lina and her brother. My youngest daughter, who is ten, but a mature reader, also listened to it, and we've already has some very deep conversations about the events of the book. I appreciate the work Ruta does, bringing life to the memory of those who have suffered and survived. I also appreciate that she writes in a way my daughters and I can connect over her novels. This book was beautifully written. We look forward to reading her other books!

After reading all of the 4-5 Star reviews I was anxious to read this book. I've read several books over the past two years set in War torn Europe, largely focusing on the atrocities of Nazi Germany and their "Final Solution", from those focusing on life and death in the concentration camps as well as the equally horrifying (and eye opening) stories of the horrors suffered throughout France and Poland during Nazi occupation. All of the books had a solid story baseline, with characters drawn well enough that you could identify with them. I gave this book a good shot - but had to stop at almost the halfway point when I saw that there really wasn't a solid story there. The "chapters" are extremely short - sometimes only a few pages, and the author intersperses little essays that in my opinion distract from the story, such as it is. Obviously it does portray the horrible treatment of the Lithuanians, but the Russian NKVD troops are limited to generally a single word: "Davai!" (hurry). One dimensional. I know I'll probably hear a lot of "I can't believe you didn't like this wonderful book" comments, but I also think I owe it to readers of these reviews to get a full perspective. I would warn potential buyers to download a sample, but I did just that and it read fine, but in trying to read the whole book it was essentially the sample repeated over and over (obviously under evolving circumstances), but without any more depth to the fairly shallow characters.
