This book is an excellent introduction and reference guide for anyone involved in setting up, running and maintaining an Executive Project Management Office.
The reach of project management as a modern discipline has expanded dramatically over the years. From it's specialist origin in tackling complex engineering projects, to it's critical role in delivering complex IT initiatives and beyond, it is now a vital part of truly cross-functional programs involving all disciplines.
Everywhere you look in the modern enterprise there is a 'project' kicking off - you are practically falling over them everywhere you step.
It should come as no surprise that for medium to large companies and enterprises to survive and thrive, a consolidated, corporate focus for management and execution of aligned strategic projects and programs is essential.
If you are interested in how companies can improve in these areas then you should get this book.
As opposed to the dry academic viewpoint typically used when addressing this subject, the tone here is measured and conversational, with many insights that can only come from hard won experience.
It is packed with concise guidance and recommendations on tackling potential high level program management obstacles - not just from a technical perspective but taking into account classic corporate politics also.
My recommendation to the author for a minor improvement would be to include summaries for each chapter which highlight the key points. I would also like to see him produce a companion workbook which can expand on the great practical examples included here that take the reader through applying tools and techniques.
Having worked in project management for over 20 years myself I can confirm how useful and applicable the content is and can see myself referring to it regularly. Recommended.
In essence, this is a practical guide with a fair level of detail into setting up an EPMO, but what makes this book a must is how it deals with corporate culture issues and the internal politics of an organisation. The indepth experience of the author in a multitude of blue chip companies is extremely apparent when detailing the practical processes to succeed in this endeavour.
Having worked on a large number of IT project in large organisation with a number of subsidiaries, I found the content always true and on the mark describing the obstacles faced while managing cross department and in some cases cross company projects.
I recommend the book not only to those seeking or working on establishing an EPMO, but also to all Project Managers who want an insight into the big picture from an organisation prospective.
I truly enjoyed reading this comprehensive guide on setting up a PMO office. It is well structured, easy-to-understand and, most important of all, contains a wealth of practical guidance on how to make the PMO successful.
Having worked myself for 13 years in project management and related areas, I was still able to learn a number of new aspects related to my profession.
I recommend it for anyone interested in project management and setting up a PMO function!
